Old 65HP Johnson worth anything?

I just replaced my '72 Johnson 65hp w/ hydro-electric shift. Some water got in the lower unit and it needs a teardown, and I didn't want the hassle.

My question is, is it worth selling? The powerhead runs fine, but the prop is dinged up, and as I mentioned, the LU probably needs a teardown. The controls are intact, and the switch in the control box was replaced just a few seasons ago.

Should I bother listing it? Or junk the motor and just list the controls?

Thanks -

I'd say for as easy as it is to post stuff on places like craigslist then why not. Someone might want it for something.

I would say it should be worth something to somebody. A good powerhead alone should be worth 250 to 300. With a running engine all the electrical should be good. I guess the old supply and demand comes into play along with location.

I'd sell it but from what I hear those LU's are hard to get parts for so you might be just be selling it for parts.

If you only knew how many of those engines are still in working order you would sell it for parts in a heartbeat. I'd run an ad in e-bay or cl and indicate you are willing to sell all or part out. If you don't have the time or the inclination to make a few extra bucks then just offer it pick up only for $100.00. That should cover your expenses and maybe help some poor broke soul that can't afford a new motor.

Just my opinion as one of those broke souls ya'll (well not broke but with son in college no new motor)

Re: Old 65HP Johnson worth anything?

I own two 1972 Johnson 65hp motors. I paid $400 for one and $150 for the other. The first engine was extensively refurbished but not rebuilt in the sense of installing new pistons, rings, etc. The total expense for the refurbishment, plus an adapter to use standard steering on the motor, which does not have an integral tilt tube, was about $1,600. My second engine has been sitting in my shop as a potential parts motor or refurbishment candidate.

I my opinion, the prices that I paid for my motors represent about what the range of values for yours would be, as a complete engine. Since your motor has gearcase problems, which is a major component with NLA parts, I would value it on the lower end of the scale. You might get more for the motor if you part it out, but probably not much more, simply because most people who are looking for parts on a '72 OMC 65hp motor, are looking for shift system parts. Once you sell any one of them, or have any one of them that is not functional, the value of the rest of the motor plummets.

I do think that the motor is worth selling, but don't expect to get a large amount of money for it.
