INDEXING SPARKPLUGS
FICHT and E-TEC engines require the open gap of a sparkplug to face or to be within about 90? on either side of the injector tip for best drivability.
The following link shows which plugs to use and how to identify 1998-99 FICHT heads, and the second part shows the tools needed and the indexing procedure.
Even though the E-TEC is not mentioned in the article, the indexing is performed the same way.

Re: Useful BRP information sources

Does anyone know where the latest diagnostic software can be ordered from?

I couldn't find it on the BRP parts catalog. I also didn't see a way to input the part number provided above.

Your local BRP Evinrude dealer can order it. I think the version is 2.0.1.2. If it has a pn, I don't have it.

Good find and paste from BBC board, the information is old on the software as 764642 was changed several times to the 777231. It is still the ficht software and for 03 and earlier engines. The software and cable to download to a PDA is part # 777230 ($43) but it for older engines also. The software is good to check codes and spec's but still cannot change anything in EMM. The E-tec EMM has led's to do a basic testing and software to test/set-up is sold only to dealers. I have heard a rumor its around $2500 as you by the laptop with it installed.

SW is Read Only, until you register it (just have to put info in the blanks which goes nowhere). Dealers aren't cookoo about selling the sw, but it's nowhere near $2500, I know I didn't pay anything close to that. I have the version mentioned above and the trickiest part is getting a USB to serial adapter that works with newer laptops w/o a real serial port. This one is claimed to work (I have an older laptop with a real serial port):

http://sewelldirect.com/usbtoserial.asp

Also, I'm not sure if the sw I mentioned is compatible with Ficht (I have '07 E-Tec's).

Now, when you "register" the sw, the danger is you can change things like injector open time, timing, idle rpm, system firmware (MAP), etc., which can have disastrous results in the hands of the unknowledgeable.

Cable is also available here for under $30:
