Timing for a 89 Evinrude 200?

Checked the timing on my motor and it read 8btc but under hood says it should be 18btc
Engine cranks good and runs but has a cough sorta and seems to run hotter than it should. Any help would be appreciated

The 18* BTDC timing figure posted on the engine is for WOT, 5500 rpms.
I do my WOT timing on the water, with a timing light at WOT hanging off the back of the boat....
Or you can use Joe Reeves' static timing method. It is posted on here many places.
Idle timing will be ATDC, 4 deg maybe, something like that. Look it up in your manual for the exact figure.

Oh yeah, you can't do it on muffs in the driveway.
