I am new to boating, I took my newly purchased boat out this weekend and did a lot of trolling. This morning I noticed a thick light brown sludge coming from the drain holes. I checked the gear oil and it looks normal (greenish in color). Is this normal to have the brown sludge? I had it out last weekend and did not get this, but then again, I didn't run at idle speed much. Is this just unburned oil? Any advise would be appreciated!!

Where was this coming from? The exhaust opening? The Gear oil Drain?

If the gear oil was good, then it is unburned oil mixed with water from the exhaust - Normal

If it was the old Gear oil, you have water intrusion into the gear case. Possible causes - not replacing drain/vent seals when changing gear oil.(little nylon washers) Prop seals damaged by fishing line wrapped behind prop.

Well, let me explain it this way. It is not coming out of the prop exhaust area. It is coming out of all the little drain holes on the side and front of the lower unit. It is the same holes that water comes out of when I hook the muffs up to it and turn the water on! It is NOT coming out of the bottom where the screw is that you drain the oil with.
