I got a 1986 90hp Johnson, and just got the manual from Iboats, it says the wot is 6500 to 7000 rpm's, is this correct? I think there is a printing mistake, it also states the idol speed should be 4500 to 5500 rpm's. I just bought the boat and motor, and want to make sure it is running correct. Will test it out as soon as the new steering cable comes in.

Re: wot rpm's

Set it up for 5800 RPM @ WOT if you want best life from the motor.

Idle should be set at ~ 650 in gear and in the water. Idle you stated is owner's manual operating range RPM, which is better taken as 5800 as stated above for keeping carbon down and best performance.

6500 to 7000 is not correct, although the motor will tolerate RPM's that high w/o blowing up, but expected life will be reduced.

try the johnson factory service manual if you plan to maintain it yourself.
