how to check retifier

How to check rectifier on 1997 1975 Mariner . Tach is acting up. Just want to make sure on all ends.

sorry thanks for the info. I have a manual coming and will go from there. I fogged the motor today and the tach works fine and when I go on the water it is sparatic .

no sure even where to look. Is it between the plugs under a metal plate?

I can't see from here either and don't have a serial number to refer to a manual.

A 97 should have the dual retifier/regulators under the coil mounting plate between cylinders. These are known for ends overheating due to bad connection, the silicon ends melt on the male/female connectors. Check and repair connections and you can swap tach wire(grey) into other rect/reg to see if tach still acts up.

Do you have any pictures. When I start the motor the tach works. When I run it on the water it works one minute and does not work one minute.

If your rectifier checks good or bad, you might also want to check the 2 yellow wires that go from the stator to the rectifier for frayed insulation and for continuity. Ohm meter check for yellow to yellow should be 1ohm or less.

Just changed out a stator with frayed yellow wires on a 4cyl 50hp that exhibited the same symptons that you describe.
