Anybody ever heard of Supermarine Revolution SM-1000 paint? Claims to be the first marine coating that can be used above or below the waterline and will eliminate the need for antifouling bottom paint. Has a 10 year guaranty, comes in 100 colors plus clear and sells for $33.96 a quart. Their website is www. supermarinepaint.com/topside-revolution-sm-1000.asp if you want to check it out. Anybody have any experience with using this stuff on a fiberglass boat??

I looked at it and passed because it also says "Not recommended for use on boats in saltwater long term" and states " for your trailered boat".

I could be wrong, and probably am, but to me that says doesent hold up like others.
Aside from that my boat is typically docked and spends its seasons on the ocean. so that leaves me out, I am sticking with with interlux

Mines trailered but it sounds as if its a one part paint. Also, what is the guarantee? If the paint fades or if it rubs off on the bunks do they just give me a touch up paint? Or do they give me my monety back? I will shoot them an email maybe tomorrow when I havent been drinking.

Re: New Marine Paint??

They make it sound almost too good to be true... I would be very interested to hear from someone who has used this paint as to how well it really performs. I tried searching for reviews on the web but I couldn't find any...

I am currently thinking about using interlux vc performance for my below the waterline paint as (until now) this was the only non-anti-fouling bottom paint I could find that was rated for longer than 72 hours in the water...

Re: New Marine Paint??

I was speaking to the folks at Supermarine today. I want to repaint my ourdrives, and this is the paint they are recommending, along with their matching primers.

I too am considering giving it a try, but wondered what results others have had?

Anyone?

Yeah, to me that says that it's not the most durable. Most any paint can hold up for a long time on a trailer boat.

Re: New Marine Paint??

I know we don't bash products here, but . . .

I am embarrassed that I used this stuff on my Monaco and it lead to major issues. I finally sanded it down and covered with Epifanes. It never got completely hard, and I could peel it off with a fingernail. I used their primer, hardener and thinner. I think the guys name is Peter and I would bet money that it is just a relabeling of his "Top Secret" stuff. Should stay a secret if you ask me . . . ;)

Peter... That is who I spoke to on the phone.

Your experience does not sound too good QC. Did you contact them when you had the problems?

Thanks,

Re: New Marine Paint??

I am not sure but I think this a public retail outlet for mil-spec paints used by the Navy. If this is so I can tell you I wont be using it. My father, brother and best buddy from childhood are all ex-Navy. My buddy says the paint they used was junk and nothing like the marine paints I have used. He was stationed on the Thatch. (missle frigate FFG) as a gunner's mate (guns). He had to "paint all the (deleted explicative) time because of that (deleted explicative".) If this is the case, I'll pass.

Sorry, but I did say he was Navy.:)

Re: New Marine Paint??

Yeah, he sent me the wrong color primer, then when I could see it through the paint after five coats  he wouldn't help me with any paint, so I decided I was done. I started with the bottom, so that I could learn enough before I got to the topsides. I decided it wasn't worth the risk to continue so I punted. I am not angry, I knew I was taking a risk when I bought it as I was considering becoming a dealer. Just didn't work for me.

My experience with both Epifanes and Easypoxy has been much better. Mine was the Top Secret "marine" coating before that new label. I would check the MSDS sheets and compare. Also Google his full name . . .

Re: New Marine Paint??

I have some of the primer, and will be trying the paint as well. I contacted a couple of people that have used it, and liked it- So I am going to give it a shot. BUT, I am NOT going to try to do my whole boat with it- First, I am going to prime and paint the motorwell cover, to see how that goes. It's about 2' x 3', and is completely detached from the boat, so I figure I can get it prepped and painted easily to test the waters before I commit the whole boat.... It'll be a lot easier to sand that back down if I don't like it than it will to sand a whole boat!

Re: New Marine Paint??

I'll tell you what...

With no reviews to speak of yet, (other than QC's so far), I'd surely not spend my money on it yet. I want to read about people's application and love for it before I spend the money and more importantly, the TIME invested in a painting project.

I went with Interlux products on my boat. VC Performance Epoxy on the bottom. PrimeKote and Brightsides for the hull sides and topsides. I've not painted the deck yet, but I absolutely LOVE that paint. Looks awesome, easy to apply and I got WestMarine to MATCH Jamestown Distributors pricing, so it's not that expensive.

Painting is such a huge investment in money and time and will hopefully last a long time, giving people a "first impression" of you while towing or on the water. I'd surely not try something "new" or "new and amazing" without seeing/reading/hearing some real un-biased reviews on the product!!!

Re: New Marine Paint??

I agree- I'd hate to paint a whole boat and then find out that it's no good... That's why I am going to do a small part of my boat, and possibly my dingy, first. We'll see how that goes.

Remember, EVERY paint that's on the market now was, at one time, the 'new and amazing' paint that made unbelievable claims. I'm willing to give it a chance. I'd stick with something like Interthane, except the color(s) I need aren't available.

I've seen photos of this on a couple of boats, and emailed the people that used it, and they seemed to like it a lot... We'll see how it goes!

Re: New Marine Paint??

Based on a google search of the company, and how they treat some customers, and checking with the BBB, [a C- rating] I'm going to pass on Supermarine, and look at other options.

I'm going to the trouble to have my drives media blasted, and then do all of the priming and painting. I have new Merc decals to then apply. [NOT cheap!]

There is no way I am going to risk having to do this all over again, because of bad paint...

Thanks to everyone for the heads up.

Thrillhouse
an excerp from supermarinepaint.com web site regarding primer for fiberglass

Supermarine Etching Primer (SM-664D) is our best selling and most popular marine primer because of its versatility, outstanding sandability and protective qualities over a wide variety of substrates. It creates a virtually unbreakable chemical bond to whatever it has been applied to which allows it to be used almost anywhere and most any application! Etching Primer should be the primer of choice on wood, fiberglass and aluminum applications. Etching Primer meets government specification number TT-P-664D so you know you are getting the best.

I ordered 2 gallons last night so ill be back posting results and pics in a couple days hope to finish sanding saturday, and spray sunday, hope it works as advertised

Sincerely
Dave

Re: New Marine Paint??

Funny that this thread has just resurfaced.

When I first started to research paint, I came across Supermarine, and had a lot of questions. Most of the info that I found wasn't too great- Not many people had heard of it. A lot of people seemed to be bashing it, but as is common on the internet, it turns out that the vast majority of those people had never actually USED it- Just read the info and thought it was too good to be true.... Or, they "heard from someone who knows a guy"... That kind of 'stuff'. nothing solid.

I finally spoke to some people that had actually USED it. I had to look outside the recreational boating world, though. It had been used on commercial boats. The people that I have spoken with swear by it, so I decided I would give it a shot. Sure, it's new- But so was Awlgrip and Brightsides, once!

I ordered the primer a while back- But had not used it yet. Today I was FINALLY ready to get some painting done, so I used it. If the paint is anything like the primer, I think I am going to like it! After thinning it, I sprayed it on with a HVLP sprayer. It went on quite well. After drying (about 2 hours), it was sandable and recoatable. It forms a TENACIOUS bond with the fiberglass and wood. I used the white primer this time, For the insides of the hull and deck, and the coverage was pretty good, given that it was a white primer.

I used about 1 1/2 quarts to do what I've done so far.

I plan to use the topside paint, too- Though I think I might just use Rust-o-luem on the undersides of the deck, since it will never be seen anyways, the gloss retention and buffability won't be an issue. Plus, it's $9 a quart rather than $35 :)
