Ted Williams 7.5 hp motor # 217-5889-1 can?t get it to start and just floods using the internal gas tank and the gas goes out the exhaust pipe, I get a spark and everything looks good except the fuel pump element has a cut in it? I was told it was for the external tank , could use some help

True but I believe to opertate right a good element needs to be in place.
Have you rebuilt the carb with special attention to cleaning all passages and
jets?Does the float and float valve work right?
If you shut off the tank valve when it floods it may start. You may be able to then open the valve and get some idea if it will run.
Don't forget it has a water cooled leg.Be sure you have it in water when you test run.

Hi thanks for the reply, could the pump element be the problem?

I had a similar problem years ago and replacing the pump element solved it.

Hi, I replaced the pump element and can get it to run but it still wont run from the external tank and with the motor off if leaks gas out of the air intake

Leaking fuel would indicate the float or float valve are not working right.
Fuel pump element needs to be installed in a 8 oclock 2 oclock position.

I am working from a manual;never seen the seat Most carbs the seat threads in like a bolt might. It may be pressed in on your carb My feeling is
wouldn't fit the wrong way. With the carb in your hand invert it and blow in the fuel in fitting. Should be closed open when upright. You can check level by placing a #4 drill between the float and carb body.Sorry i can't be more specific.
