i recently got a 9.8 merc serial@7088559 and am having problems with it.motor runs perfect in neutral and reverse and throttles up fine.but in forward gear the motor seems to bog down and has no power when the throttle is applied.is this an electrical or mechanical problem.and how would i go about fixing it myself.thanks.

Re: new 9.8 owner needs help.

Howdy Oreo.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Sounds to me like your engine is down on power. . .has enough to go in reverse but not enough to go in FWD.

In Rev it has lower gearing and the throttle is prevented from opening all the way.

In FWD the throttle should open all the way.

The possible causes are too many to list here. Check the linkage that blocks the throttle in reverse, check that the carb throttle plate is opening all the way in FWD.

Get a factory Service Manual and do a linkage and synchronization procedure and a compression check.

Let us know what you find, and good luck. :)

Sounds lean from here. Try to richen the idle 1/4 turn and see if that helps.

just had the carb apart and cleaned but made no difference.did notice a problem with the plugs.both have good spark but top plug is always dry and clean.is it possible that no fuel is getting to one cylinder.
