Force 50hp 2 stroke motor

Can anyone help me with a recent boat that I just bought which had a 50hp Force 2-stroke motor. That is pretty much all I know about it. It was attached to a 1987 Bayliner. The guy that sold the boat says that it was some sort of spring, so the boat can't be driven by one person now. Another person has to sit in the back and pull a little latch down to let the boat accelerate forward as another steers. Any idea how much this piece costs and if it is easily fixable?

I would be suspicous of the controls. Move the throttle lever forward and make sure it
1. puts the lower unit in gear
2. advances the spark
3. opens the butterfly on the carb

IT should do all 3. After checking you will have to work form there to find the problem. It sounds like you need a good manual if you are going to work on it yourself. Without a good manual you will need a good mechanic.

Could be the throttle cable end is jimmied together, or broken.
Or any number of parts in the throttle linkage could be broken or disconnected.

Could be as cheap as a buck, or cost a bunch more.
Need to find out what is wrong first.


And as always, please post the model and serial number of the motor we are talking about.

awww crap, i was just there and i forgot to get the model name down. here are some pics though. i circled in red which part has to be pulled down for it to move forward. i'm pretty sure a piece is missing in that loop at the bottom which allows it to be pulled down.

It looks like the throttle cam might be flopped over 180 degrees, maybe some body with a 50 hp can tell you more, does the cam even touch the carb when you move the throttle?Maybe make a video of the linkage area while moving it , and post it?

for some reason your throttle linkage is bent down, do me a favor have someone while your looking at the motor put the boat into full throttle(while the motor is turned off) and you should see the throttle shaft move, now that should move your throttle linkage that will press the cam on the throttle to accelerate the motor.

now the cam needs to be resting on the throttle(the thing you marked) as the throttle cable moves it moves the town witch in turn moves the linkage that moves the cam to do what that person in the boat needs to do to get the boat to move, from the pic it just looks like the cam just needs to be repositioned.

is the throttle the little piece that i previously circled? if so, the cam doesn't touch it at all. I had my friend put the boat in full acceleration with the engine off and everything does move properly, or at least it looks like it.

yes the throttle is the peice you circled now, take a pair of pliers and loosen the cam nut to where the cam moves freely, now move the linkage up so that the cam rests on the throttle, and tighten the cam nut.

thanks for the info, i will try that next chance i get. so it doesn't look like a piece from the throttle is missing? what is supposed to go in that little loop on the bottom of it? the previous owner said something fell out and it's easily and cheaply replaceable, but i don't know if he was just bsing for the sell

that would be a no, I really dont see anything missing from that picture, fix the cam then do the test again, with the motor off of course, if the throttle is moving then you should be all set to go but you might want to test it in a bucket of water(garbage can) dont go full throttle though as you could damage the motor or yourself, when you test the motor runing make sure your motor is shifting in forward and reverse. just give it a little bit of gas if all is well take it out for a test run

It looks like the cam and linkage might have been off ,and some one put it back on 180 degrees out,,in the pics the linkage arm is going down hill ,if it was popped off at the cam, the cam rotated fowarduntil it touched the carband then the linkage popped back on ,it looks like it would have the linkage arm straight and the cam would be touching the carb linkage then . It looks like now as you advance the throttle it would pull it away from the carb link. Just my two cents worth
