I just aquired a boat with an 1975 evinrude 115hp engine. It runs well but have to use either spray to get it to start if she sits more than an hour or so. Why? I have never owned a boat before, but would love to be knowledgable, any suggestions on where to start?::redface:

The spray has no lubricant, so it really should not be used to start the engine.

Normal cold starts on your motor require that you use the chokes that are part of your carburetors. They are activated by the use of a toggle switch located just below the ignition switch on standard controls, or by pushing in the ignition key on more recent controls.

The choke plates cut off air, forcing the vacuum created by the pistons to pull a richer fuel/air mixture needed for a cold start.

The choke plates need to be absolutely synchronized and 100% fully closed while cranking to work properly; you will need to remove the air silencer covers and observe the plates while someone cranks the engine.

If the choke plates are not fully closing, move the choke solenoid in small increments until they do.

Thank you, I have watched the plates, and I don't get full closure from the choke toggle switch. I can manually close it off completely, but have not tried to start when I do. Will the gas/oil mix affect this? Not sure what he was doing before, but he couldn't tell me the mix so I assume he was likely not getting it right. Should I drain the tank and start with what I know is correct (50:1)?

The gas/oil mix should be 50:1; that does not relate to the current problem, however.

You are enriching the fuel/air mix with the ether, which you will not need to do when the chokes are working properly.

Similar problem with choked carburetors: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=351951

If you're not getting full closure of the plates you may need to adjust your solenoid choke solenoid. You do this by just lowering it's placement in the bracket. On the starboard side of the carbs you'll see a battery-sized cylinder with a smaller cylindrical peg coming out of the top. Lower the outer cylinder a little bit and your choke should close fully.
