1965 Evinrude 6hp Fisherman. This is the 3rd needle and seat I have put on this motor.I have set the float correctly. It will pass the blow test but will not shut off the fuel. Not pumping bulb to hard, and it will still flood.I'm wondering if the fuel is coming from some place other than the needle and seat. When I got this it had a new carb kit installed and new plugs that had never been fired.I assume the engine was abandoned because of this carb problem, which has me trying to figure this out.Fuel overflows out of the throat no matter what you do to the float. Can anyone help with this problem

When you turned the carburetor upside down, was the face of the float exactly parallel to the surface of the carburetor body?

Did you replace the float?

if with the carb bowl off, the fuel shuts off when you push up on the float and the float level is set to spec and when the bowl is on you flood out.

it sounds like you may have a pin hole in your float, take it off and submerge it for a while then shake it to see if it has fluid inside. or perhaps the float is binding on its pin (possibly a bur?)

Perhaps you have a choke problem. Check the choke plate, it should be fully open when choke is off. If not properly adjusted carb and engine will flood. Do you have manual or electric choke?

This is a solid float. It replaced the old cork one.The only way it will shut the fuel off is if it is set to deep and the bowl itself pushes the float up.Then I get pessure at the bowl nipple , when you pull the line off ,it will spray a little from pressure against the bowl.ie fuel cannot enter.Useing the primer bulb.Something is going on here thet I cannot figure out. Thanks

So when you squeeze the bulb, you actually see fuel squirting into the carb even though the bowl is full? If so, are you sure you have the proper seat and valve or float for this yr and model?

Re: Where is that fuel coming from?

Here is what I have done so far.I have put in a new carb kit.I removed a new carb kit that was on there to start with.I have replaced the needle and seat three times.I have tried to reseat one of the old sets with a jewllers file. i have put double gaskets under the seat to raise the needle.Trying to get more pressure on the needle.I have sanded the old float trying to get more travel on it.The extreme was to set the float so deep that the bowl would shut it off.I raised the gasket around slow speed jet.I lowered the gasket around the low speed jet.I am getting overlow from some where and after this much trouble I intend to fix it.Any help is greatly welcome cause when we figure it out I will let you all know what the problem is Thanks Elbow

You said it had a new carb on it when you got it. Maybe it's the wrong one? And the seat kit you're putting on it is for the right one? It's possible they aren't the right ones for each other...

Re: Where is that fuel coming from?

Here's my thinking on it.The motor was abandoned with new parts on it for some reason.I have had this little motor running and it runs great except it won't Idle correctly because of the carb problem. It draws fuel thru engine vaccum because the float will not shut the fuel off.It will over flow, flood because of this. The only way I can make it run is not choke it at all and pump the primer just enough to use as the choke.ie, If you listen to the throat you can hear the fuel coming up and stop there or your flooded,a little more and it poures out the throat. When Idling its up and down, pulling fuel thru engine vac then down.I bet we can fix her!

Can you read any numbers on the carb.? If yes check it against the part numbers for your engine and make certain the carb. is the original or order a kit for the carb. you have. I know this is a shot in the dark but this sounds crazy to begin with. Never assume anything. best of luck. Rick.
