Help! I have a 2000 merc 135hp (pre optimax) and was having a problem with it overheating.
could not figure it out so i stripped it down, took the heads off and found top 3 pots scored.....top one port side is pretty bad. and that one nneds a new piston.

So......can i rebore the block or is it plated?? where is the best place to get some new pistons??

i really want more power out of it, so was thinking if it is at this point should i change electrics and so on to get it up to 175 or 200hp??

Are they the same block as a early 90's XR2??? my mate has one but no leg??? another option i thought?

please any advice would be great.

Thats a steel sleeve engine so you can have it bored .015 or .030 oversize. Pistons are available from Mercury or aftermarket.
Changing ignition will not increase hp. Induction and block changes.
Different block from your buddies you have a 2.5.
140/150 is the same and 200 another block.

Not short of rebuilding it, selling it, and handing over the cash as a down payment toward a 200.

Sorry - that was a sarcastic reply. The only way you're going to get 200 HP from that engine is to fix the problems you have, sell it, and use that money as a down payment on a different 200hp outboard.

Is it *possible* to get 200 hp from that block? Maybe. Would it be economical, reliable, or even SAFE? Doubtful. The folks over @screamandfly could point you in the right direction.

In my book, what you have to do to fix your piston problem is "rebuild".
