i have a 1977 glastron 165 inline six mercruiser pre alpha drive. ive noticed the outdrive has been getting extremly slow going up or down! now it doesnt work at all. its in the up position now with a little brace to keep it from creeping down. when i use trim out button i just hear a click, when someone holds the switch i can tap on trim motor and it tries to spin but doesnt sound too good. so i unhooked the three wires coming from motor[one being i asume for up other for down and one [black] for ground. connected those directly to battery and same thing[when tapping on motor it spins a little but sounds bad. so im pretty sure it is just a bad motor. didnt know if i should just but a new motor or look for a whole used assembly. thanks ken

Start with the basics, have you checked your fluid level? Creeping down would not be a bad motor, it's a hydraulic problem. And after that's solved yes you could still have a bad motor or pump. Diagnose one step at a time.

That means you need at least a new motor for the pump.
Since it creaps down, I would bet the pump is bad too. Have you checked the oil in the pump? What condition is it in?
Might want to go up to the adults only sticky, and download a manual for your engine and drive. (#2)

or look for a whole used assembly.

Ayuh,... Updating to a newer trim system would probably be the Best Bet...

thanks guys. i took pump assembly off boat after posting earlier, oil was full and looked pretty clean. hooked motor up to battery charger and nothing happend until i tapped on motor then the shaft just tried to spin. so im sure the motor is defenitly bad. i will try to find a decent used one[complete pump&motor] or just buy an after market motor only. dont want to put another 500+ dollars in this boat for new stuff.
