Locally, mercruisers are well respected and others are not, so opinions are hard to get. Anyways, what early volvo I/O's are OMC rebrands. Local shops say certain volvo drives are simply OMC as volvo bought them out. Is this true? I have seen some really nice boats, but they all had volvo drives.

Local shops say certain volvo drives are simply OMC as volvo bought them out.

That alone tells me they don't know what they are talking about. When Volvo and OMC went into the joint venture in 94 the drive was called by OMC a King Cobra (third different drive that OMC called the King Cobra) and Volvo called it the SX. This was a drive that looked like an OMC Cobra drive, but it was all Volvo cone clutch inside. Completely different from anything OMC's dog clutch and ESA system. After Volvo bought out OMC in 98 the drive was called the SX only and that drive was used till 2007.
As far as the old Volvo engines and drives, avoid the 250 and earlier drives. 270 and newer still have most all parts available.
Engine wise, avoid the Fords. They were only used for 2 years and every thing but the long block is NLA.
Personally, I wouldn't own anything but a Volvo.
