I have a 33 HP johnson outboard that I need to Identify the year. the Model is RX-15S. I am think it is a 1967 of 65 but not sure. I also need to identify the carb. I have a Clymer book for johnson motors from 1956 to 1957. I do not see my exact carb in the manual It looks very close to the model c with electric choke except is does not have the electric choke portion or even the screw holes to mount the electric choke. the other difference is that the model in the book screw adjustments for the high and low speed needle valves. My carb has plastic screen over the air intake and on that intake cover are nobs connected to the high and low speed needle valves. It looks like there may be a manual choke version of the model C that is not covered in my manual.
I believe that I need to rebuild or replace the carb. The motor will run at my house fine ofcourse there is no strain on the motor. When I take it to the lake it just will not get up to speed. I tried many adjustments and could not get it up to speed. I my second trip to the the lake I tried adjusting it again. all of the sudden ot went up to speed and ran well for about a minute. Then it shut down. I noticed that I forgot to open the airvent on my fuel tank. So the motor ran ruff up until enough vacum formed to restrict fuel flow. That lasted until the vacum was enough to cut off fuel to the engine. When I got it home I also noticed that fuel was dripping from around the High speed needle valve. With the leak and what happend on the lake I am thinking it is best and sfest to rebuild or replace. Can anyone help me with my questions and do you agree the carb rebuild or replacement is the best option?
