Boat is a 73' Searay with a 120hp 4cyl chevy engine. I could not find a name plate to tell you the displacement or other info. The I/O is labled 120/140HP.

Problem is the engine will NOT overheat when hooked up to the hose as you have city water pressure pushing the water thru. Once the boat is in water, there is little burps of water but no flow at all. Engine will overheat in 5 min.

Now, I have been told it needs impeller and a line on the outdrive to fix the problem and to have a shop do it is $300 or a tad cheaper depending. A friend of mine is a little concerned that it could rather be a sand clog and that the engine is trashed. Is this the case? I am new to baots, but not to engines, could I handle doing the impeller and lines myself?

The impeller is the first thing you check in any marine overheat. They are a maintenance item and should be changed every other year for peace of mind.

If you don't like the cost of having it done, go up to the adults only sticky and download and OEM service manual and do the job yourself.

That;s good to know. Is it likely sand could be the problem? I am thinking not as it will run on hose water all day. If it was sand I am sure it would overheat on hose water as well.

Bingo,
Look at the impeller.
