Re: Evinrude 70

welcome to iboats!

What year is this motor?
How long have you owned it? It was running fine before and this just started?
What recent maintenance has been done?

"Coming from out of the cover...can you be a little more specific? Where is the smoke escaping from?

Anything under the hood scorched or burned?

engine schematics are available free online at www.shop.evinrude.com click on 'electronic parts catalogues" but you won't find wiring diagrams there, for that you'd need a service manual.

There are only two ways that smoke can get under the cover.

1. Exhaust smoke leak
2. Paint burning from overheating.
Well, three. Wires burning.

Re: Evinrude 70

assuming the leak is under the hood, you have exhust cover on the port side kinda triangular with alot of bolts,or you have a powerhead mounting gasket down bottom of powerhead, then there is the adapter gasket thats below that. The path is it should go out bottom of powerhead thru the midsection where there is a exhust coupler with a gasget ,that then goes into the lowerunit flowing out the prop. Are you saying when the engine runs you get NO exhust out the prop, what can happn too is if there is anykind of backpressure ,even water if the piece between the lowerunit with the rubber gasket is missing, you can gert exhust up thru the midsectioncoming in the front under the carbs, some exhust coming thru an older engine is not unreasonable, but if nothing or very little is flowing in the normal path ,i would think the problem has to do with the exhust housing in midsection, see if the link works, look up your eng and see exhust housing, you could have a gasket under the powerhead bad http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=2495683ee5b3dbfbd36e4fb336a84b6c

there's an exhaust housing cover with a rubber seal just above the relief ports; if that seal fails, exhaust from the relief ports can get back up in there.
