I spun a rod bearing on a 1981 mercruiser 260 this spring and took it out and put a new engine in. I tore it down today just to see what exactly happened and started looking up part numbers and found the pistons to be silvolite pistons for Chevy truck, crank to be cast for Chevy corvette, nova, 1690's to 1970. I cant find the cam number to look that up. I bought the boat last winter and didn't do all the necessary checkouts that should have been done on a boat that was sitting for 10 years. It is a 1981 Mark twain so I assumed the engine was a 81. Anyway the pistons and rings look great, heads look great and the cam looks great and the crank you can definitely tell were the bearing spun and the bearing was all out of whack. I'd like to find out if I have at least a marine cam in there.

The part numbers are on the package it comes in, not the cam.

Look between the gear for the distributor and the lobe at the back of the cam for the number 944 or 626. A lot of times there is just a paint stripe around the cam at that location, different colors designate different grinds for the various engines, if it's painted I don't know but it's probably an automotive cam if it is. Chevrolet used pistons for various things in their marine engines, I don't think they designed a specifice piston for boat use, and truck stuff is common since it is usually heavier duty. I have a 260 hp marine engine circa 1986 in the garage, it came with cast pistons that were common to trucks thru the 80's, cast crank and standard rods, nothing fancy. Cams have different specs than they would for automotive use. I don't have the original cam anymore but it had one of those two numbers on it.

great, thanks for the tip. It was painted back there but up twards the 4th or 5th lobe I found the number 944. The heads are 624 heads, I thought I read 824 but in my investigations I only found 624. was starting to think someone just dumped a car engine in but with the cam it may have been a mercruiser.
