Hi steering is quite stiff on my 20r70e 20 hp outboard. Just wondering if anyone knows how to go about adjusting the steering to loosen it up a bit

cheers

There is a grease fitting on the steering stem. It should be greased at least once a year.

The steering is just with the handle with the trottle on it which you sit at the back of the boat with next to the motor to control

It's called tiller control.

Go to shop.evinrude.com - go to your make, enter model, go to lower unit diagram, no.62 is your grease fitting, diagram shows where it is. Get it greased before it siezes. Then it's not too easy.keep pumping grease into it until the old hard stuff is forced out.

If you hunker down and look right above the transom, between the stern brackets, you will see a screw head. That is the steering friction adjustment.

However, if it has gone a long time without lubrication, the upper pivot bushing is probably getting tight. Greasing it now is like closing the barn door after the horse got out. The only fix for it is to take it apart and clean the corrosion out. Check back if you need instructions...it takes a bunch of typing.
