Does anyone have a good ol' Sloppy Joe recipe that is close to what the school system used to serve back in the '60s? I loved that Sloppy Joe we got at school.

Here is a recipe I have but it's lacking something.

SLOPPY JOES
Can easily double or triple the recipe.
Figure approximately 6 servings per recipe.
Freezes well.
1 # ground beef
? cup chopped onion
? cup chopped green pepper
? cup diced celery
8 oz. tomato sauce
? cup ketchup
1 T. vinegar (or lemon juice)
1 ? teaspoon Worcestershire
1 T. white or brown sugar
? - 1 teaspoon dry mustard
Salt + freshly ground black pepper
Brown and drain ground beef. Add other ingredients and simmer over low heat for at least a couple of hours. Serve on good quality buns (e.g. egg bread) with carrot sticks and other crunchy raw vegetables.

I stir in a bit of ground cayenne pepper...and more worcestershire to spice it up:) Garlic is also required as mentioned.

Not sure what the schools may have done and I don't know any lunchladies that post on iboats:D

I used this one recently--

1 1/2 lb ground beef (85/15 or better)
1 medium onion
2 tbsp brown sugar-packed
1 tbsp prepared (yellow) mustard
2 tbsp cider vinegar
1 cup ketchup or catsup
2 tbsp worcestershire sauce

Brown ground beef and chopped onion until onion is clear.Drain well.
Add all other ingredients and simmer for one hour.

A couple of things not in the original recipe:
I add salt-pepper-garlic to the ground beef.
Refrigerate overnight and reheat slowly on stove top before serving. A double boiler works best.

The other recipe was from a local church cookbook.

This one is from my 1969 Betty Crocker Cookbook.

1 lb ground beef
1 medium onion-chopped
3 tbsp catsup or ketchup
3 tbsp prepared (yellow) mustard
1 can (10 1/2 oz) condensed chicken gumbo soup

Cook and stir ground beef and onion until onion is clear.Drain well.
Add remaining ingredients. Simmer for 15 minutes. Serve.

Bart, I tried the chicken gumbo recipe, and again, something was missing.

Maybe my old taste buds have just lost their tasting ability.:(

Most of what I cook these days I let sit in the fridge for a day or two to allow the flavors to meld or marinate. As a matter of fact we just had the last two servings of lasagne from this time last month. It tasted a lot better than when fresh made or even a couple of days after.

You know you cant get that nallys brand in BC, or libbys for that mater any more, that and lumberjack syrup were a fixture in our house in the
60s and 70s.
by the way for lumberjack style add a can of maple/double pork and beans:D

Re: Sloppy Joe Recipe??

I believe my problem might be the fact that I don't let it simmer or sit for a long enough time. Yeh, reheating it the next day for the first time eat'n would be better but I can't wait that long!!:p

Next time I'll add some garlic and maybe the chicken gumbo soup and then let it marinate in the fridge for a day, then reheat.

not to change the subject, but the baked spaghetti, i cannot recreate either. maybe it was not suppose to be backed, they just kept it in the oven too long, keeping it warm.

My elementary school caf had the BEST chicken corn soup. I've had it similar but never quite as good.

Try pan frying the onion, green pepper and garlic in some olive oil over medium/medium-low heat and then brown thawed beef in that (turn up the heat after adding the beef). Then as an extra spice, add a little bit of cumin, adds a depth to the flavors.
