1000 watt generator question

if i take the amps x volts for my charles 40 amp charger on our boat then i come up with--40 amps x 14 volts = 620 watts

my question is this. will this formula work for a battery charger?
if it will then a 1000 watt portable generator would work fine?
if i'm not on the right track, and you know how many watts the charger will pull or the proper formula, please let me know

I think that you are correct with your formula.

And your not over 3/4 of the rated output so you should be fine.

Your posts made me think of this . . . I was trying to remember who called him a Bug-eyed Dummy, so I Googled . . . LOL
Bug-eyed Dummy Biffle

For all of you non-NASCAR fools who do not know where his nickname "Bug Eyed Dummy" came from, Let me elaborate. During the 2004 Watkins Glen race, Greg Biffle spun out
Sterling Marlin. When Sterling's crew chief asked him what happened he replied, "I got run over by a bug-eyed dummy." Clearly one of the best quotes of the year. I wonder if Sterling has always secretly called Greg a bug-eyed dummy or if this was a random remark. Trust me, the picture above does no justice to his bug eyes, but it was hard to find a good one, Greg often hides behind his glasses.

I think that you are using the charger output numbers.
Hopefully it won't make a huge difference, but you need the charger input values to match/compare to the generator output.

Re: 1000 watt generator question

right you are tim; thats the only way i could think of, and the charger dosnt have the wattage on it.

looked at gennys at a hard ware store this morning and the price on a honda 2000 was so close to a 1000 that i oped to go with the EU2000i

Good choice.

I love my Honda generator, although I don't use it enough. Big enough to run my trailer's AC but still small enough to carry around.

And I have never actually used it to run the AC except when trying to see if it could. Even with how quiet it is, I can't see doing that.

I suspect that the 1000 probably would have been fine, but the 2000 is a lock! Problem solved.

Re: 1000 watt generator question

jeff; with next summer in mind at powell we were thinking we could try the same thing.
how long can you run on a tank of gas?

tacklewasher;
i have a nice little 1800 watt mc culloch. had it for 2 years and never used. went to start yeaterday and the crank case was empty-dry-
its way out of warrenty and when i took it aparte and found the leak(the crank case is seamed together in the bottom) with no time to fix now.

didnt want to mess around. wanted some thing that will work, so going on honda's rep.
will fix the other and should be able to get 250 or so. I HOPE. i think we spent 600 on it when we bought it.

We just got back from Florida, sleeping in the van in a Walmart parking lot overnight each way. The A/C ran all night on a full tank while set at 68?.

We have a 1000i running a 6,000 BTU on the boat.

ac-demo--.jpg

The 1000i will run the 6000 BTU unit for about 6 hours, but we are comfortable by then and just let it die.

Powell can be dasterdly hot in the summer,

but the scenery is unparalleled.

And I put in an electric fuel pump both in the van and on the boat to be able to fill the generator from the main tanks, eliminating the need to carry a separate gas can.

Does the charger have an input amp rating on it? If so compute the power.

A 1000 watt generator supports a little over 8 amps.
