Hey!
I'm a new owner of a 1978 23' cc Mako. I'm loving the boat so far but I have a few questions about its engine. Its a 2004 yamaha 250hp hi power direct injection (HPDI). The engine runs great with plenty of power.
What should I do this winter? Its been a while since I have winterized an engine, and I have never winterized a new engine(fuel injected).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Do I need to put antifreeze in the waterjacket?
Fogging oil in the intake until it stalls?

Also, do I have to worry about leaving it in the water to late in the season? I don't want water to freeze in it (or does it completly drain every time?)...is there a better way to leave it up (ie - all the way turned to the left/right for good drainage)?

Thanks!!

use FRESH fuel, not 3 month old fuel.
add stabilizer to FRESH fuel according to the stabilizer manufacturers instructions.
run engine normally for about 20 min to insure the stabilizer is distributed throughout the fuel system. before removing the hull from the water dissconnect the oil link rod from the throttle arm, allow oil control arm to go wide open, start engine and idle IN GEAR for 10 min. shut engine down and recconect oil control rod to throttle arm.
we just protected the fuel system AND the shiney parts inside the engine.
from there is clean and spray the powerhead with corrosion inhibitors and drain and change the gear oil.
dont forget to remove the onboard flush device and allow that hose to drain then recconect.
leave engine in the full down position and its self draining.
everything but the 20 min run can be done on the flusher as it will be at idle speed only.

Thanks! No fogging spray in these newer engines...or does running the engine with the oil control arm wide open replace this?

thanks again!

Another quick question...I was just searching through some old threads and I wanted to double check something I read.

Is it true I can NOT run the engine on the hose fitting. Is the hose fitting just for flushing the engine when the engine is NOT running. If the engine is running it has to be on muffs, correct?

Thanks!!!

Does anyone know the answer to this? Can I run the engine on the hose fitting or does the engine have to be off? (I have been told either way is ok, but I read that you can't run the engine if its only hooked up to the hose via the hose connection).

Much appreciated!

Only run the engine on the muffs down below where the water intake is. Never, ever run the engine on that hose connection at the power head.
