Re: Making A Prop

I'm looking for info on making a prop

Why???? Are you an engineer???
There are tons of used ones out there and even more manufactures of them.
If you just looking for a hobby, id suggest stamp collectioning....:D

Oh haha...stamps....;)

I'm just curious, Im playing with the idea of making a small one....I'm actually leaning towards plastic.....just looking for a project to say "I've done that" with.

I don't even own a boat for it to go on!

is there a ratio for prop diameter to boat length, cuz that blade in the blog is almost the same size as the guy making it.

If you just want to make a small one then all you'd really need to do is figure out what you want to use for a hub, build a single blade buck and use that buck to form the material. Aluminum would be easiest because once it's annealed, it's easy to shape. Just use different types of hammers to get your shape, cut the final edge shape and weld to the hub. Then start balancing if you want. I wouldn't recommend ever using it on a boat if you do this but it would make a conversation piece for sure.

I understand exactly what you're saying, I've been doing some research and talked to some local trades people. If I do it something like what the pictures in the blog show, and just do one blade, then all the blades (3) cast in plastic off the one pattern, would be the same...I don't have the skill to hammer the aluminum that accurately.

I actually found a foundry out here that casts props, they said if I wanted I could watch a pour!

Can I post pictures in the forum, if they let me take some?

The TV show "How it's made" had an episode on how boat props are made a few weeks ago. You could probably find some pics or video on their website if you're really interested.
