I have seen similar posts about trailer brakes but this one is a little different. I have a brand new 2009 dual axle EZ loader with surge disc brakes. I used the trailer and boat about five times with no problem. I backed the trailer up a slight incline and the brakes engaged while in reverse. Now the trailer is fine going forward but anytime I reverse the brakes lock up.

What do I need to do to fix this?

Re: Trailer Brakes

If you already have one of these reverse lockout solenoids(you easily may), check your wiring to make sure it is getting energized properly.

If you stop on a hill and then put your vehicle in reverse, the reverse lockout solenoid will not work because the brakes are already pressurized. The lockout only works when the brakes are not being applied as you put the vehicle in reverse.

I have a 2008 single axle ez loader trailer for 18 foot larson with surge brakes. This is normal when you backup on incline. I'm sure the electrical came with a 5 pin plug. Your tow vehicle elctrical adapter should be able to receive a 5 pin plug. The 5 pin plug will release the brakes when backing up on an incline. You can also order a lockout pin from ez loader that will "lockout" the surge when backing up on incline so you can backup. The pin costs about 5 bucks. The electrical adapter though is the way to go.

I have an 03 expedition which has the 4 pin and 7 pin connectors. The 7 pin has a contact in the center which carries the backup lights. When i bought the new trailer 2 years ago, I cut off the 5 pin connector and put on a 7 pin. Beside that, it looks a lot more heavy duty.

Some trailers have the solenoid with 3 ports. When shifting in reverse, it blocks the master cylinder off, and dumps the brake line into the master reservour. ALl automatic. My Magic Tilt came that way but its not rocket science to change it out.

Re: Trailer Brakes

Are your brakes electric or hydraulic? If they are hydraulic, there is a lever on the tong that turns off the brakes for backing up.

Again, not all actuators have this. Sometimes, you have to drill your own hole.

The first thing you should do is to put the truck in reverse and measure the voltage on the blue wire of the five pin flat connector on the truck side. If you don't get 12v, you have found the problem. Maybe a fuse. If the 12v is there it may be the solenoid or broken wire problem.

I have the same issue as my driveway is on an incline and I too back in . I use an 1/2 " socket / ratchet extension as a lockout pin. It works fine didn't cost a dime.
