So the power tilt motor crapped out on my Mako so i took a look and was trying to figure out how to get the tilt motor off without taking the engine off my boat. I was able to get to 2 screws and not the 3rd. The tilt motor rotted off around the 3rd screw. I still can not get it off. I do not have an owners manual to the engine. Here is my question

How do i get the 3rd screw out? Do I have to take the engine off the boat to do so? there is a fair bit of corrosion on the lower unit. Any input is good input

Thanks
Mike

I live in MA so the season is coming to a close and I was hoping i could install the new tilt motor before it gets too cold to work outside. I already have a new tilt motor ready to go in

rent or borrow a cherry picker, lift motor, so you can get to the bolt.

mike, there are 6 bolts holding hydraulic unit between transom brackets, sometimes you have to remove bottom two engine to transom bolts to remove back bolts. The unit comes out in one piece, then remove back screw on bench. The motor can stay on the boat, just tilt motor up an lock in place.

To successfully remove the third screw you need to pull the motor from the transom.
TD is correct.

If you are attempting to only remove the tilt motor you will have to take the engine off of the boat:) If you re-move the whole tilt n trim assembly, 6 bolts thru sides of transom brackets, you can leave the engine on the boat. You should buy a manual, it describes hydraulic removal. With the unit on the bench you can take back screw out of tilt motor, clean screen and replace motor on the bench. Then test an re-install whole hydraulic assembly.

Depending on corrosion you may be able to leave the engine on the boat, remove the port clamp bracket to access the back screw. If corrosion is too bad yes the engine will need to come off.
When you replace the trim motor replace the phillips head screws with either 3/8" or 5/16" head machine screws of the same length and coat them with a soft gasket maker like Perfect Seal or Aviation Form a Gasket by Permatex. Then you will be able to replace the trim motor in the future sometimes without pulling the engine with a 1/4" drive set and universals.
