Re: 235 johnson powerhead

You are pretty much stuck with the 235 powerhead unless you change the midsection exhaust adapter. Currently yours is setup for any bubble back 235 engine. The loopers won't fit nor will the flatback crossflows. Likely you can find a 150/175/200 crossflow midsection adapter in a salvage yard and swap it out. Once changed, you would be able to use any of these crossflow flatback engines. These flatbacks were made by the thousands and used/rebuilt engines are more plentiful than the 235 version. If you swap for a flatback crossflow, all of your components will work, like the ignition system, starter, etc. The 235's used the larger 1 3/8" carbs which may be too much fuel/airflow for the flatbacks. I'd look to get the specific matched set of carbs with any new powerhead to save time fiddling trying to make the big-throat carbs work. You did not say what year this is, so check the exhaust cover on any replacement block. You may need the special holes for mounting the later model power trim box.

Re: 235 johnson powerhead

The 1980 and later 235's were the big bore engines at 160 cubic inches. Yours is one of those, so you are limited to the big bore heads found only on these later 235's. Since you need to replace the one head, you could consider trying to locate a pair of used stock high compression heads from the 80/81 models. 325638/639.

Take a picture of the heads. I will be willing to bet that you can use the heads with just a little smoothing up.

Might be able to machine them true and flat again, but then you would need to find a low comp. head gasket or use double head gaskets, depending on how much they have to take off.

The sealing area of the heads shouldn't be hurt. Just clean up the pitted area down in the chamber and put a new set of gaskets on and let her go. Post a picture of the heads.

Not sure how to add a picture

The heads are flat cant even get a .003 feeler in anywhere but the combustion domed area is pitted
