The bad part is when you glass it and then it won't go in because it's too big.

If you are filling the gaps with an epoxy that gets hard when set, then the issue of the transom wood contacting the original glass at the edges is moot. The epoxy itself is "hard", if not harder than the wood. It's a non-issue...

I am by far no expert in this area as I am just taking on my first transom/deck re-do but I think Chinewalker summed up my thoughts quite well....

Re: Transome size?

The problem isn't so much the the wood or epoxy is hard, its that it may only make contact in a small area, this concentrates the stress and "may" cause cracking. If the wood was in full contact for its entire length it wouldn't be such and issue. When epoxy is used to bed the stringer, its in full contact with the hull, spreading the load. Using consrtuction adhesive just spaces the wood off the hull so there is no contact, which works also. As I said though, for a transom its not an issue.

Re: Transome size?

If your boat was built like mine originally, in 1977, it is likely that it was assembled by a bunch of stoned fiberglass guys. It looked as though they barely shaped any of the wood. There was plenty of space around everything. All the fiberglass in the corners was bridged. And most of the woven roving barely had any resin. Of course water seeped in everywhere and the wood peeled out like a banana. Now I am paying for all the doobie breaks they had. (32 years later)
