Re: Idle speed adjustment 40hp 1992 force

There is a rod that everything connects to and the idle screw rests against the engine block, it has a locknut and a screw so when you turn the screw it twists the rod and causes more or less idle. If you look at where your throttle cable is connected, then watch it move you will see that a rod runs up next to the block and eventually to the carb, you will see the screw that rests against the block that is attached to the rod.

cheers thanks very much, thats exactly where it was too:) one other thing do you know if there is a way to stop my engine smoking so much im using a 50:1 ratio so if i fill up my 22ltr tank im using 440mls of oil, my plugs keep fouling up, iv tried using a hotter plug and also started putting only 400mls of oil in to 22ltrs of fuel, i also played around with the mixture screw but think i have made it worse. Thanks for ya help

You can't change the idle only. You have to adjust some linkage if you change the idle. Don't forget that. Should be a little sticker on your motor reminding you to do that.

Not sure but if it is way to rich then that might do it, in the book most force motors say that the idle mixture screw is 1 full turn out from lightly seated for a starting point then it says turn it in until it speeds up and starts to sneeze then 1/8 turn at a time til it slows and runs rich then back 1/2 what you turned then set idle to about 8 or 900 rpm. Be carefull not to get it to lean, that can damage the motor over time.

Are you using a surface gap plug,I hope so because an extended tip will melt a piston in a short period of time as will hotter than specified plugs. These motors don't like to idle for any length of time as they were designed for mostly wide open running. They will foul plugs quicker generally, but are easy to work on and very reliable if serviced properly. Have you run a compression check lately ,if not it wouldn't hurt to give you an idea of what the cylinders are doing [sealing wise],and do a decarb and clean out the recirculating systemto help with the smoke.Keep the ratio at 50:1 to prevent galling a cylinder or worse. Hope this helps with your issues. MOPARMAN .........................ROLL TIDE
