Carb Problem

Gorrila with a wrench, ME, rebuilt the carb on my 3.0LX. While reinstalling the shoulder bolt holding the linkage on broke off at the threads. I took the lever off the carb and tried to knock out the shoulder bolt out but no go. Looked up the lever on the internet and it says discontinued. So what are my options?

The carb is a Mercarb2, 1995 model.

On a better note. The engine seens to idle better and cranks a lot better. Just can't hold the throttle cable to the carb now.

Thanks,
Jason

Hey man,

I am a precision machinist. If you want. Send me the lever and I can fixture it and drill the bolt out for you for a nominal charge. It will be good as new when I am done.

If you UPS Ground it to me, I can turn it around in a day.

Send me a PM if you are interested.

Re: Carb Problem

You should be able to do this yourself with a small drill but to drill into the broken bolt and an Easy Out set.

Re: Carb Problem

True, but if you break the easy out on that small bolt, (easy to do)
Then your in a world of trouble because you have HSS (High Speed Steel) snapped off in the hole. (62 HRC) That can only be gotten out via a carbide end mill (sometimes) or EDM. Now your talking more money.

Under 1/4" dia., easy outs are risky.

Anything can be done. But the right way is always the best way.

Good luck.

Re: Carb Problem

I think you are thinking this is a bolt that is srewed in. It is actually pressed in. A good hydrolic press might be able to remove it but I don't have one. Thinking about trying heat.

Here is a pic of what I broke, circled in red. I broke the bolt off where the threads meet the shoulder. The whole bolt is pressed into lever 34.

Re: Carb Problem

Why not remove it completely and use a stud setup.I may have the arm you need.

Re: Carb Problem

Don't heat it. Your going to butcher it. Plus, The expansion rate of the metals will most likely be the same. So it's not going to budge. And you will just distort the lever and melt any cromate or zink that the steel has on it for rust protection.

My friend who is a 40-year GM certified mechanic brings carbs to me all the time for broken off bolts and such.

If you feel the bolt can be pressed out, Then you will need a new bolt pressed in with the proper diameter machined on the bolt with the correct threads.

On a discontinued part like you have, be careful what you do. You can't just get another one without finding a doner carb.

Re: Carb Problem

You could do that as well.

But remember, that pressed bolt is designed as a permanent set up. So, if you are going to use nuts, bolts, studs. Make sure you use loc-tite on all the threads. There is a reason carb manufactures don't do it that way.

You could lose control of the craft if that system comes lose.

Not a big deal, but do it right or your boat might end up in the harbor masters office. LOL

Re: Carb Problem

Most times you can cut it flush, center punch it, and drill it.
Let me see if I have a replacement arm.All the carbs on the shelf only have a stud for the cable. None have a pressed in setup.

Re: Carb Problem

Do like Bt Dr said. Remove the lever, cut/grind off the stud and drill it out and stick a bolt thru it. Use a locking nut to hold the bolt to the lever

Re: Carb Problem

Went and got a 1/4" stud. Drilled and tapped the lever. Installed the stud to the lever with locktite red. Got brass shims for either side of the control cable and a lock nut. Dry fit was perfect. Letting the locktite cure tonight. Will do final assembly in the morning.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Carb Problem

Had the same problem in the spring but I was the gorilla popped lever off drove out what was left of the stud with a punch (pressed in) and fashioned a new stud out of a 1/4-20 flat head allen screw after countersinking the back side of the braket just like new.

Re: Carb Problem

Get a 2" long 1/4-20 stainless steel bolt, on the threaded end, put on one nut till you run out of threads, put it on the carb link. Put the nut on to hold it. You may have to cut part of the threads off.
Then, if needed, use a spacer to keep the cable straight, then put the cable on and mark where you want to drill the hole.
Drill hole, cut to length, and the job looks like is was made that way.
Kind of like this.
