I hate it when that happens. I've had that frustration too many times. Better double check to ensure you reassembled everything in the right order and didn't leave out any parts. I know that sounds like a pain in the butt, but better to be safe than sorry. If you are sure everything went back together properly, adjust the cable.

I have never done a LU, so I'm sure someone else can offer a more experienced opinion.

im sure i got it all in the right way. got my screw in for the clutch dog cradle and stuff. all that is correct. even greased the cradle heavly so it would stay in place till i got it together.

If you disconnect the shift cable and manually move the shift lever, will it go all the way into reverse?

bump

another thing to add that right on the high point of the bar in top of the motor it starts going into foward gear on the high point but when going to reverse it you have a little bit more

If the shift rod is pushed too far up into the coupler, it won't properly engage in reverse. Make sure both coupler bolts pass through the indents in the ends of the shift rods.

Re: 1958 johnson 35p

When manually shifting it at the motor (not running) and spinning the prop by hand, it should just start engaging equally relative to the high bumps on the interlock bar. Adjust it if it doesn't.

Ok, having said that, lets back up. How much play and slop is there in the linkage? When you start to move the shifter lever, the rod should start to move up and down with no delay or slop. If there is slop, you will have to locate and correct the cause. There are two swivel pins in the linkage between the shift handle and the shift shaft that goes into the exhaust housing. Are they or the slots they go into worn? Once the shifter shaft disappears inside the exhaust housing, there is a clevis inside. Many of the clevis' have broken. Many of the shift shafts have broken also.

ya i guess i was worried about that too. there is quite a bit a play in the shift handle when moving it. now the shift shaft i remember moving it up and down and there was much play if any at all?

this engine block has such low hours on it... the good compression dont understand why everything else is going bad?
