What do the inside of the cylinders, top of the pistons, and combustion chambers look like? It sort of looks like a high speed stop, or a high speed hydrolock. Any bent con rods?
It looks like part of the crank wanted to stop very fast, and part of it wanted to keep spinning. If there is no evidence of damage anyplace else I guess the crank could have been out of balance from day 1.

Re: Att: Bondo, opinions please

Just a thought here is all, But i Have heard a few times over the years about the crank shaft braking in half Do to either the shaft from the drive was to long and hitting the crank and doing that, Or also some one installed the wrong engine coupler and I think the drive shaft was pushing the coupler into the crank shaft some how, And the way they found the broken crank was by pulling on the crank shaft pully and it slid in and out a lot. I posted a little bit about this idea before here on Iboats also, I went and found the link for you just to see if this might touch base in some way for you just to keep in mind is all. Good luck to you with it.

Ayuh,.... That's the Only thing I've ever seen that'll cause That...

Had a 4.3l that was Grounded, Hard, a few years ago....
Replaced the drive,+ he ran it about 3 months with the crank like that...
After awhile the viberations,+ whatnots, We pull the motor to find the crank sheared in the center bearing...
We replaced the whole motor...

Yeah, it's cast for sure...you can tell by the thin parting line in the first picture. I've seen failures like this caused by beating the timing gear and/or the harmonic dampner onto the crank instead of pressing it on using the correct tool. It doesn't break the crank when you do it, it just starts the tiny stress cracks and the normal twisting of the crank as the cylinders fire when the engine is running does the rest.

My guess is this engine was assembled with a bad crank.

Someone either dropped the crank and/or never mag'd it before assembly because it was a 'new' crank.

I broke one just like that a couple of years ago. was able to limp back to the ramp (less that 2 miles). Until I did it, I would have thought that wasn't possible. My break was at the rear main though

Had the Mains been turned down and the Machinist didnt leave enough fillet radius, that would create a stress point right were the break happened. Maybe a far out explanation but possible?

Taking it to the shop tomorrow, And NO, the timing gear nor damper were beaten on.Started making noise 300ft from the slip, RPM never exceeded 1500.
