O.K. on the shifter side of the block there is a 1/8" rubber tube that goes from the top of the block to the bottom. mine is cracked and brittle. I noticed that there was some fuel in it. What does this tube do? Would this tube have anything to do with the motor not wanting to rev up under a load??

It is an oil line to lubricate the upper main bearing. It is important for the life of the motor, but not the cause of your lack of power.

Lack of power (half power) is almost always because it is running on one cylinder. Pull the flywheel and you will probably find cracked coils. Or dirty breaker points if nothing else.

Thanks for the info. I have already replaced the coils, plug wires, points, condensers. set points to .20 and gapped the new plugs to .30 both cylinders are firing because I pull the plug wires off one at a time and the motor keeps running with just one plug wire connected. Oh and I also converted to a fuel pump. It will rev up in neutral, but when I shift into gear and throttle up, it just lags and wont speed up at all.

Thanks, ordering a kit today...should I soak the carb in cleaner or just use the carb spray cleaner?? One any better than the other?

Stop revving that thing up in neutral or you will have a really good reason for it running on one cylinder when it throws a connecting rod through the crankcase.

Cleaning the carburetor probably won't hurt, but that probably isn't the problem. I'd rather suspect a broken shock absorber spring in the lower unit. Does it seem to bind up?

Thanks FR I wasn't revving it up for an extended period, just for a second. I have an extra shock absorber, I will tear it back apart and check the old one. I look down in the spare with a flashlight and it appears to be o.k. Would I be able to visually see the break in the spring, would it be obvious?

If you have all the oil and gunk out of it and a good light, you usually can see it.

GREAT my spare looks a-ok!!! now going to pull the old one. Will the gear at the bottom of the shock absorber shaft stay in place or do I have to take the whole foot apart? And thanks in advance for all your knowledge and help!!

After you remove the water pump, and the bearing plate below it, just reach in and grab the shock absorber and pull it out. No surprises are in store for you when you do.

My CD had a similar problem, it turned out that cleaning the carb did not improve the situation until....I removed the freeze plug over the low speed orfices and cleaned out that pocket, then replaced the plug with a new one and replaced the cork float with a plastic one, and replaced both packings on the high and low speed needles, then it ran fine.

Thanks, Jay I ordered a carb kit with a new float, so hopefully that will do the trick!!

One other thing to look at it to make sure the carb advance is in sync with the ignition advance.

make sure you replace that 1/8" hose or your top bearing will run dry. That hose is designed to send all the fuel mix from the bottom of the block, up to the top main bearing.
