I have a Manual Start, Manual Tilt, Short Shaft Yamaha 40HP. I think it is a mid/ late 80's motor, but I'd really like to nail down the exact year and model of this motor. The problem is that it seems to have led a rough life until I got it 2 years ago. It has been painted over several times and there are no visible ID or Model # tags on the motor. I've tried to remove the paint where the tags should be, but there are no tags there. Is there any other way to ID the motor? I thought that someone might know of a certain part that may change part numbers every year, and that may be visible on the outside. If so, maybe I can match it to the parts microfiche for a certain year. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
