Hal,
First Welcome to Iboats,
Please Kindly edit your post and remove your email address as it is against the rules. If you do it yourself you will just save the time it takes for a moderator to do it for you.

As for your oil problem. Its a 2008 motor. Is it under warranty? If it is just take it right back.
It is normal for all engines to burn oil. But 2 liters (or even quarts) is way to much for a 3 hour run. Pull all the plugs and see which one(s) are covered in oil. Then do a compression test on that cylinder to rule in or out the rings. If its the rings the motor needs a teardown. If its not the rings, then you have bad (or missing) valve seals.

You didn't by chance do or have an oil change just before this 3 hour cruise, did you?

Yes, it is under warranty.

I do suspect the rings or valves but am hoping, since there are three of us at my Marina with the same motor and problems, that someone else has been through this recently and what Mercruiser has to say about it. It sounds like there should be a lot of others in our position. Lookat the odds here.
Thanks all.

Just curious how you broke the engine in. Do you use synthetic oil?

trouble is, even if you glazed the cylinder walls, 2 ots/liters is way too much to burn unless there was a bad batch of rings. Sounds like a 60's era car motor with 150,000+ miles on it.:)

Thing is, in order to leave 2 liters of oil in the water in just 3 hours you should have see the oil slick behind your boat. Was there oil all over your transom? Have you run the boat on the trailer and looked for blue smoke?

If its under warranty then I wouldn't worry about it to much. Merc is pretty good about warranteing items that are obviously not missuse or abuse related. Just do what you can to minimize the downtime thats involved with getting the actual repair done. Try not to get in a game of "he said she said" at the dealer. And certainly don't say to them "i read this on the internet.."
Engines have warrantees for a reason, give merc a chance.

Re: 2008 Rinker 280 6.2 Mercruiser - USING OIL

Hello, New to your site...Need Help and want to ALERT others. I have had my Rinker 280 for two years now. It started last summer and has continued this past season. After about a three hour trip I am down 2 LITRES (Canadian sorry) OF OIL. I have the 6.2 MERCRUISER with about 150 hours on it. And guess what!!! I have found out that there are now THREE of us at my Marina (Trenton, Ontario, Canada) that have the exact same boat and exact same oil problem. The mecahnics knew of mine and found this out when winterizing the others. Our luck is not that bad. There must be hundreds of others out there with this new problem. Any help guys ??? Mercruiser now has all winter to plan how they are going to fix this.
There is no oil leaking in the boat and no noticable fumes.
Also, the oil was not just changed before these trips.
Appreciate your advice. Hal (Freedom49)
Do the other boats have the same amount of hours you have???

Also did you have your dealer look at your engine last summer along with the help of mercruiser tech support? If yes what did they say back then?

you're in Canada eh ??

take a sample of your oil to the cat dealer lab ..... in the west thats Finning.

they can tell you exactly whats going on ....trust me, you will be amazed at the info they can give you ...about 15 possibles including rings and valve seals.

Cheers ....ps ...only costs $20 Canadian ...;)

here's another idea for you seeing as you are all at the same marina ...maybe you all winterize your boats the same way and you don't drain the raw water line from the raw water pump to the heat exchanger .....that line has the oil cooler in it ...and maybe water has frozen in the line and caused an internal leak in the cooler which would account for the abnormal oil loss ..... maybe pull and pressure test the oil cooler :rolleyes:

Cheers

Oil cooler leak. Now that's an excellent possibility. Don't know why I didn't think of it. I've run into that a couple times.

There was guy on the ifourwinns.com board that had this problem...the oil cooler froze and raw water and oil were mixing...he had milky oil but I'm not sure if he also saw high oil consumption as well..I have to go back and find the post...think it was a Volvo engine not a Merc....

Ya ..what I usually see is the end caps popping off and raw water just gets pumped into the bilge ....but maybe in this case an internal cooling tube cracked and the oil pressure is enough to push oil out. Never seen it, but last week a guy comes up to the dock ...goes and gets his trailer ...starts the boat ...drives it on to the trailer ....pulls onto the hard .... hooks up the ears ..... engine won't start ...... as a matter of fact the engine is cranking like crazy ...#$@%$#@% ....... what the hell ..... that's what an engine cranks like with the plugs out ......checked oil .....water in oil ...pulled the valve cover ....holy moly .... 6 of 8 valves siezed open !!! Well .....never seen that one before either ...LOL

Mercruiser small block engines don't have oil coolers, only power steering coolers.

Rinkers are cool boats ....very euro ...so maybe like some euro boats eg. Donzi, they do have oil coolers.... also if you have experience with boats you'll know that owners make all kinds of mods for various reasons ...in tropical regions due to high heat and small engine compartment ventilators (to keep salt spray out) everybody runs an oil cooler. Oil coolers can remove way more heat from an engine than anything else.

Not much tropical heat in Canada, or a need for or mention of an aftermarket oil cooler.

After about a three hour trip I am down 2 LITRES (Canadian sorry) OF OIL.

Re: 2008 Rinker 280 6.2 Mercruiser - USING OIL

check previous posts to see who brought up the frozen cooler issue. BRRRR !Also who's to say where the boat came from ...last year my son went to CA and bought a 236 Rinker for half what the boat cost in Vancouver Canada. Maybe the previous owner was a Donzi/Formula guy ? After messing around with boats for 40 years I don't rule out anything PLUS ....wouldn't a leaking cooler perfectly explain such a massive loss of oil loss.;)

Of course, I have never been wrong before :D ...just ask my wife ...;);)

Re: 2008 Rinker 280 6.2 Mercruiser - USING OIL

All good ideas to take to my mechanic...possibly OIL COOLER ..hmmmm
thank you gentlemen.

BUT.... **** RINKER 280 Owners (2008-09 years) 6.2 MERCRUISER***
*** Looking to talk to 280 RINKER owners with same boat with the same oil problem. ***
After a three hour cruise it is down 2 litres of oil. If you have the same boat and problem (there are THREE at my Marina alone) I want to hear from you.
I would think that obviously it is the rings and/or valves but want to hear from you first.
1. Have you dealt with Mercruiser yet?
2. Has it been repaired and what exactly was wrong?
Trust me , I will be contacting Mercruiser and the Warranty issue over the winter but want to see how far spread this problem is and some history first.
Thanks guys. Hal (Freedom49). Trenton, Ontario, Canada.
