1959 Fastwin Choke Problems

I purchased a boat that came with a 1959 Evinrude Fastwin with Simplex controls. I removed all the steering and controls as I didn't like the space it took up. I got the motor running after about 100 pulls manually. Ran good. I went to start it one week later and choked it like I originally did. After I pulled a couple dozen times, I noticed the choke isn't working. Although I pull it out, nothing actually moves inside now. When I pull out on the knob, the lever inside actually moves away. Nothing else moves with it on its own. It used to when I first started it. I can manually push on it so it works, but that doesn't help much for convenience as I need the cover off and a third hand. It doesn't seem that anything is broken when I check the parts. I have never worked on boat motors and have minimal motor experience as is. Can't afford to send it to a shop. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I have an old 63 out there that has a black plastic choke pull knob on it.are you saying its broken off or, why won't it close the butterfly?There should be linkage there to close it.Figure out a way to connect it to the linkage to the butterfly.Drill a hole thru the pull knob and wire it to the linkage,but don't tell anyone I told u that. LOL

There should be a lever that pivots on the carb, the long flat end goes thru the slot in the choke knob, the other end is connected to the choke butterfly. There is also, a piece of plastic in the housing that the choke knob runs thru that has detents for full-half choke.

If you look at the parts diagrams on shop.eninrude.com, the linkage is pretty much the same for all he 18,20 and 25 hp engines up to 1972 or so (for sure in the 60's) Parts are probably the same, too. Not much changed on these thru the years.

I had one of these, only it had a late 60's 20HP power head.

Here's the pic of it from a '58 E18. The choke rod is #44. But I even know how these work and that looks confusing to me. You might need to see a working one to get an idea. It needs to connect to the butterfly valve (#70) which is on shaft #71

If memory serves, they're also hooked up to a spring that will let the choke butterfly open a bit when the motor first starts, even with the choke knob pulled out. I remember one not closing, as yours is doing, and I sprayed some pb blaster (penetrating oil) on that mechanism, wiggling it until it was freed up, and putting a little light oil on it. Give it a shot..
