I know that it has a rev. limiter at 6100rpm. if and when the rev. limiter is activated does it stay active until key switch is cycled? I am new to this boat. it is a 1996 javelin 389t with a 1995 evinrude intruder 150 with a renagade bass four blade prop 14x25. when the tah says it reaches 6100-6500rpms the motor starts skipping. I back down to idle and it idles fine, but if I go to take off again it starts cutting out. now if I shut the motor off and restart it runs fine until i hit 6100-6500 on tach again. I am not sure the tach is right because the motor is not wot. which means the pedal is not all the way down. is this normal or is there a problem. I may be wrong but a 150hp on a 18'9" boat swinging a four blade 14x25 prop i dont think should tach out so easily.

you need to check your link n sinc. also if the hot foot and linkage, is not adjusted correctly, it could be pushing the butterfies past horizonal.

man I got the same motor on a 17' McKee Craft with a 19 pitch 3 blade prop and cannot get over 4200 rpms. I am going to check to see if it was repitched or something...but you are running a 4 blade 25 and spinning over 6K wow. You may need to check your tach.
Check your fuel filter and lines for clogs or cracks..also check your spark on each cylinder with a spark gap tester..should be a thick blue streak at 1/2" gap..check plugs..check/clean carbs..you can put on an aftermarket power pack that has an adjustable RPM limiter or turn it off. I though the RPM limit on this motor was 6800 RPMs not 6100..I could be wrong. also make sure your tach is set to 6P...whats your idle RPMs?

RPM limit on OEM power pack is 6100 RPMs....CDI power pack is adjustable.

I think you may be having some hub slipping problems
That RPM and pitch with a 2to 1 gear will put you at about 70 MPH
whats your speedo reading

I agree with MHG as its a hub slipping, overtrimmed or mounted on jackplate to high. The rpm range for that engine is 4500-5500 rpm and rev limiter is set @ 6100rpms.

Re: 1995 intruder 150 starts skipping

Thank You for all the responses. I need to buy a manual. I want to check the rpm's and see if tach is right. But is this what happens when the rev. limit kicks in. I talked to the prevous owner and he had some work done to it a year to year and a half ago and has not run it wot since then. just used it to put in brush piles. He said he used to be able to run it wot with no problem. I pulled the cover off and looked at the power pack, rectifier and wires and plugs. It has a omc power pack, cdi stator and cdi rectifier. gray plug wires. I think it has the wrong plugs. it has champion QL87YC instead of QL78YC. I want to buy a timing light with tach or rpm adptor for fluke 88 DMM. not sure of speed, speedo not working right due to low pickup in foot stopped up with trash and sticks. cleaned it out but still have a restriction.
