help with my 1979 mercury 40hp

I have a 1979 fhantom bass boat with a 79 40 hp its been setn up for 3 yrs the wires are almost rusted into comeing from under the flywheel i turned the moter over and its not getn any fire .my uncle had it stored at a boat place and i called to find out what i could about the boat he say its something i dont wanta get into its gona cost alot to fix but its a clean moter and where do i start to try to get this moter to run? thanks Dale,

Hey BD, Welcome to iboats!

Are you sure that it's a 1979 and that it's a mercury motor? I didn't think merc made any 40HP engines until 1990...

If you post the serial number for your engine then we can tell exactly what motor you're dealing with.

A good place to start with that motor is to check the compression. If you don't have good compression then you'd be wasting your time trying to fix anything else.

Compression should be more than 100PSI and not more than 10% difference between cylinders.

The motor could very well be a 1979. I had a 1977 40hp that I bought new in 1977. Was a good running outboard.

oops! You're right of course. It must be a 2 cylinder. For some reason when I read that first post I thought he was talking about a 3 cyl :redface:

Yes im sure its a 1979 40 hp mercury ok here is the seial # 05368943 and it has good compression Thanks Dale,

According to your serial number it is a 1979 year.
