Steering question

Hi,
I'm looking to buy a used boat, and I found that I can move the outdrive left and right about 20 degres with no resistance.
Same, I can turn the steering wheel 20 degres without actually moving the drive.
What is this due to?
Is it an easy fix or can it turn into a disaster expensive fix?
Any help is apreciated.

Re: Steering question

sounds like a no feedback steering system, or a hydrolic, that is low on fluid.

Re: Steering question

Hi,

It's a 1995 Stingray 719zp.
Bravo 3 drive with power steering.
Don't know about the rack.
And the power steering isn't low on fluid.

Re: Steering question

Welcome to the iboats.com forum. The experts here like tashasdaddy and many others can help you fix any problem with a boat, motor and trailer. While I am not an expert, each of my five boat purchases have been used and I can tell you that now is the time to do some investigating before you plunk down your hard-earned cash. The steering problem you describe could be as simple as a broken or missing pin at the cable/outdrive connection. It could also be as serious as a damaged/broken outdrive tiller arm. Somewhere in between those extremes would be the complete replacement of the steering helm and cable. The iboats.com online store has complete steering systems for your boat under $200 depending on the cable length. I would recommend you go to the link below and download the appropriate manual for the BravoIII drive and do some reading. If you still have questions, post them here or hire a qualified mechanic to checkout the boat. What does the current owner of the boat say about the problem? Good luck!

EDIT: Here's a link to Teleflex's online library where you can read/download instruction manuals for their products which might help you also.
