Hi all first I wanted to say another quick thank you to all the folks who helped me with my post about launching my boat. I just purchased a 1988 20? bayliner Capri with a 305 (5L) motor (it runs good and for 2000 bucks I couldn?t pass it up). I am completely lost in the world of boats and all things marine the more questions I think of the more I come up with. I come from the automobile world and everything on this V8 looks so foreign to me

I?m pretty good with fiberglass and electronics ( I used to do competitions stereos ) so I?m looking forward to fixing this boat up to its full potential. Many pictures to follow as I take this journey.

so without any further adoo here is my first batch of newbie dumb questions.

Is a chevy 305 the same thing as a mercruiser 5Liter what is the difference between a chevy 305 and a mercrusier 5.0L what

My valve covers are really rusty . Will these valve covers fit my boat? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SB-C...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Like my valve covers my intake manifold is showing signs of rust is there an aftermarket intake manifold that someone would recommend ?

Why does my air filter look so weird I?m used to the big paper air filters this is a little cylinder 9 inces in diameter and one inch high.

What kind of carburetor is on this motor.

What type (weight) of oil do you all recommend I live in sunny southern California where it gets to be a bitterly cold 50 degrees in the winter ?

Its really hard to steer it takes quite a bit of pulling to get the outdrive to turn. Any ideas

I want to replace the gauges with something that doesn?t look like its from battlestar galactica. Can someone recommend a good set that doesn?t cost an arm and a leg and yet is still pretty easy to put in.

Is there a good site that I can buy parts from (both replacement and aftermarket).

Is there a book or shop manual I can buy so I don?t have to bother all of you with so many stupid questions like this.

thank you all for reading this and thank you even more for your answers.

Re: My first volley of dumb questions.

I can't help you with your inboard engine questions, I've never owned/worked on one.

Your manual of choice should be an original manufacturers manual. I believe it is available here on Iboats.
You can look through several sets of guages here on Iboats as well.

Mercruiser has a website and you can also get parts here on Iboats.

You see a trend here?? lol.

Iboats is probably your best source of info and or parts.

Re: My first volley of dumb questions.

I'm going to move this to the I/O section as that's what most of your questions relate to.

I could be wrong but I think the "air filter" you are talking about is actually a spark arrestor. I don't think you have an air filter.

Re: My first volley of dumb questions.

Manuals are available in the "Adults Section" for download. Should answer almost all your questions. Read them and then if you still have a question we`d be glad to answer it.

so without any further adoo here is my first batch of newbie dumb questions.

Is a chevy 305 the same thing as a mercruiser 5Liter what is the difference between a chevy 305 and a mercrusier 5.0L what Brass core plugs, cam, head gasket is stainless or graphite. The headgasket and core plugs are made from those materials so they dont corrode. The accessories like starter, alternator and engine circulating pump are marine. When buying parts always use marine.

My valve covers are really rusty . Will these valve covers fit my boat? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SB-C...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories I believe those are for vortec heads and yours are not. You might have them if someone upgraded before you owned the boat. A pic of your engine would clear it up.

Like my valve covers my intake manifold is showing signs of rust is there an aftermarket intake manifold that someone would recommend ? If running in saltwater go back to the cast iron intake. If running in freshwater an aluminum intake can be used. I have used Edelbrock intakes with good results.

Why does my air filter look so weird I?m used to the big paper air filters this is a little cylinder 9 inces in diameter and one inch high. Its a flame arrestor, not much dust out in the water so it doesn't really have to filter.

What kind of carburetor is on this motor. Need more info to know.

What type (weight) of oil do you all recommend I live in sunny southern California where it gets to be a bitterly cold 50 degrees in the winter ? I use straight 30 weight or the expensive Merc synthetic. Best thing to do is download the manual and use what it calls on your engine.

Its really hard to steer it takes quite a bit of pulling to get the outdrive to turn. Any ideas Do you have power steering? Your trim tab might be out of adjustment if you dont have power steering.

I want to replace the gauges with something that doesn?t look like its from battlestar galactica. Can someone recommend a good set that doesn?t cost an arm and a leg and yet is still pretty easy to put in. Shop ebay, good deals pop up all the time.

Is there a good site that I can buy parts from (both replacement and aftermarket). iboats marine store.

The manual also covers scheduled service intervals, lubes required and tools.

Re: My first volley of dumb questions.

Those valve covers are not just for Vortec heads. They changed the style in 87 to the center bolt type vs the side bolt type.

This is true. I have a 1993 Merc 5.7 with center bolt valve covers and they are not vortec.

EDIT: I use to have a 1987 Merc 5.0 and it didnt have the center bolt valve covers. No telling if all the 1987 boats came like that since merc doesnt really go by years on the their engines.

Simple Green works good. Really, you can use just about any cleaner/degreaser.

They pretty much mean nothing. You have to look at the specs. I had an 87 2150 and it is 20.5' long. Bayliners way of making you think you have a bigger boat than you really have. I sold mine 7 years ago to my neighbor. Sold it to him for $2500 and it was in excellent condition. He got a good buy.

you need to get the hull id

it is located on the transom on the starboard side

will probably start with BL... and end with two numbers designating the year of the boat, e.g. ...89

you will then have to contact bayliner boats somehow and ask them for specs on your boat
