Honda B100s steam coming out water stream

I recently purchased an older Honda B100s Serial Number 150127?. I am unsure of the year.

I believe the motor has less than 10 hours and has seen very little use. It starts and runs perfectly.

However, I prefer to troll at the slowest speed possible. Whenever I adjust the idle down to a slow trolling speed the inspection stream will turn to steam. I assume this is very dangerous so I always crank the idle back up until I get water flowing again. Is this normal on these types of outboards? Is there any way I could run the motor at a slower speed without the fear of overheating?

Thanks,

Joe

Sounds like it is time for a new water pump.

The impeller probably took a set because it was rarely used and now the water pump is not working up to snuff.

It's a pretty easy job to swap out the water pump. After doing so you should have a good stream all of the time.

Also, it might be time for a new thermostat. If it is stuck or not working correctly your engine could run too cold or too hot.

Where can I order the parts (and what parts do I need)? What year is my motor? Where can I find instructions or at least a diagram to replace it?

You can buy some Honda parts here on iboats. Your serial number looks a digit too short. Do you have a model number on the little plate near the clamp brackets. I would suspect you have a pre-1997 motor.

It is not too hard to change a water pump. But things never seem to go easy with old outboards especially the first time you do something. If the motor was run in salt water, you may have corrosion issues and the bolts my break when you try to get them off. If you try to do this yourself, it is highly advisable to get a manual for your motor. It sure will make things easy. If you can't buy the parts here, boats.net could have them.

This motor is like new, never ran in salt water. It should come apart very easily. I'm guessing its mid-80s vintage. I received a 1984 manual with the motor, but I have found some minor differences. My motor is CDI ignition (the manual suggests points). My motor specifies 10w-30 oil on the cover, my manual recommends 10w-40.

I will go ahead and do the water pump replacement kit. Is this the correct one: http://www.iboats.com/Water_Pump_Service_Kit_for_Honda_Outboard_06192_ZV4_000_Sierra/dm/*******.548920871--**********.771801921--view_id.369044 I've searched all over and I can't seem to find the proper kit.

If you're using the motor only for trolling, you may want to look at a different pitch prop and keep the revs up to ensure a steady stream, but the mph down. If you do change the prop, do not go WOT...you're likely do some damage.

Also, it does sound like you need to change the impeller...which should be done every couple of years.
