Re: Chirps when cold

i'm having a brain fart right now.

There is a TSB for this cold chirp

Not positive on the year at this second. I'm not at work.

Call the local dealer and give them your vin number.

If it applies then it's a new tensioner and AC bracket.
your tundra could be to old for this to be applied but better be sure.

just thought i would let ya know..

So is it a warranty issue? let me know when you find out more would ya?

I'm out for another 3 weeks (surgery)

it's a 3/36 tsb.
That's why i asked you to call and give them your vin. they can verify.

It's not very common but I have seen some.

One word
Do NOT spray belt dressing or any other "quiet" product. It makes a mess of the grooves and requires cleaning every groove by hand. It will not stop your problem if the tsb applies.

If it does not apply replacing the belt should take care of the problem. Make sure your pulley grooves are clean and your idler pulleys (non grooved) are not pitted.

2002 model is way out of the 3/36...

The cracks in the belt show you it should have been replaced a long time ago.
20 some bucks for a new belt and a little time and that will probably solve it.
Those GatorBack belts suck for a serpentine application unless you like a whirring noise where the belt runs over the tension pulley.
I tried one and took it right back for a Gates belt.

I have seen belts that require a motor mount to be removed to replace. These are a PITA. If not it's simple to replace a belt. A little trick if you rout the belt and are having trouble getting it over the last pulley put a padlock around the belt and pull it over the pulley like a zipper. This really should be a simple job.

yes , some early 1990's GM cars are like that , (the engine mount)add's mucho time to the r+r. PITA !!!!

Re: Chirps when cold

any sign of cracks on any drive belt, serpentine or not is DEF time for it to be replaced, don't cheap out on the belt , you'll get exactly what you paid for it...ask for the better belt when ordering......too many times I have had customers return after a week or less with the new belt screaming ...we stopped using the cheaper ones,...come backs are costly.

Oh since I have read further in the thread...... It might be an idler pulley of one of the pulleys. I used to work at Toyota and have a great relationship w/the mechanics there so I will ask if there is anything on the Toyota VIS about this.

I would venture to say it's your alternator. My 4runner does the exact same thing. When it dips down into the 50s, or lower it chirps until she warms up. I had it checked out, but my mechanic told me that unless I just wanted a new alternator wait until it gives. That was about 8 years ago.

Re: Chirps when cold

I hate those type of noises where you can't quite figure out where it's coming from. If you stand in one spot, it sounds like X. Move a bit and now it sounds like Y.

Anyway, there's an old trick to help isolate the sound source. You can use a long handled screwdriver as a type of stethescope. For example, place the blade against the body of the alternator and the handle to your ear. You can probe around and find where it's loudest- that is the likely source.

Now the disclaimer for the safety police out there- yes, you have to use your head in more ways than one. Be careful around moving parts and the belt. For example, I don't want to read how you lost your flowing locks in the belt. Done wisely, it's perfectly safe.

BTW- The length of your chosen screwdriver is inversely proportional to your testosterone level. Real men use a stubby ;-P

I bought a stethoscope years ago for that purpose but I am hardly ever where it is when I need it.A sawed off broom handle works very well for that purpose and they are cheap enough to acquire that having multiple copies won't break the bank.LOL.Ron G

Re: Chirps when cold---UPDATE

I forgot to mention that I did installed a new belt, no more noises. It was a piece of cake too, no scrape, no cut on my fingers and hands.
