Repaint my boat

I have recently aquired an 86 Centruy Cabin cruiser. I am in the process of restoring it to mint and need to paint it. I have never done this before, but have spend the last couple of weeks researching it and feel like I have a pretty good idea of the process.

My question is can I paint in sections. That is can I one day clean, repair, sand, prime and paint one section then on another day come back and do another section until the entire project is complete. Or is this something that must be done all in one day.

Thanks

Do each step and complete it before going to the next step.

It would take 10 times longer to complete a small section and then move and start over. Plus the paint line would show where you stopped and started.

Welcome to iboats!

You want to "restore it to mint" then why are you using paint and not gel coat?

"mint" is a relative term. I am trying to make it as nice as possible and stay within my realm of capabilities. I have done minor repair with gelcoat, but a project of this scale would test my abilities.

I agree that you should paint all parts of a color at the same time. It's not the actual painting it's the prep that takes so long. You need to give the primer a couple of days to dry and then sand to 220 grit or 320 grit before painting. Primer can be sanded after 24 hours but it tends to be gummy. A light 320 sanding between coats of paint will make it realy shiney. Two light coats of paint if you roll and tip or three coats if you spray. Many new boats are not gelcoated they are painted with Awlgrip.

If you use an epoxy primer it should be top coated w/in 24 hrs and epoxy primer is almost impossible to sand.

People have had fantastic results using roll and tip with interlux perfection paint

add my 2 cents
epoxy primers HAVE to be wet sanded....dry it clogs the paper!
