How often should the value adjustment be checked on a 2008 Mercury 15hp.

I bought the motor new last year and have now run it for a normal season of use. The manual says once a year. Is that excessive????

Thanks

Re: Value Adjustment Question

I'd say that if the factory recommends adjusting the valves once a year, it's not excessive.

Most important would be the initial adjustment, since all the parts are wearing-in and you'd expect the clearances, if they were going to change, would do so in the initial wear-in.

So, I'd definitely check them at this time. If, in the future you find the adjustments are stable and unchanging, you could consider extending the periodicity of your adjustments.

But it's hard to go wrong with the mfr's recommendations, likely they've put a lot of research into it before making them.

Re: Value Adjustment Question

Valve lash tends to reduce as the valve wears. When it gets to 0, the valve burns, doing major damage.

Keep it adjusted and keep being happy.
