Re: Gas tank sizing

It all depends on where and how far you're going but a 6 gallon main tank with a 2 or 3 gallon spare/reserve probably should do for 15HP. My motor is a 90HP and I use a 12 gallon main with 2 - 6 gallon reserves, but we run a lot on the St. Johns River in Fl. and it's a long way between marinas/gas pumps. Plus the price of gas "on the river" can be very high and the age and quality of "marina" gas can be questionable, so I like to carry "enough". Good Luck!

Some guys run dual 6 gal tanks, guess it all depends on what you want for weight in the boat.

The 15 will use about 1.5 gallons per hour (GPH)at wide open throttle (wot).
About 4 hours on a 6 gallon tank. A tiny fraction of that at trolling speed.

I often wondered the same thing. I have (2) 6-Gal cans, but I have not carried both cans yet. I guess I would for a full day on the water.

Thanks to all who replied. I will use a 6 gallon tank with a 3 for reserve.
Have a good weekend!

Make sure you rotate the reserve fuel into the main to be sure you always have fresh fuel.

More than likely, the 6 gallon tank won't take up any more room in the boat than a smaller one. Why not use two 6 gallon tanks, running one dry then switch to the other one. That will avoid the "old gas" issue. Nobody says you have to fill them all the way up if you don't need all that gas or weight.

Agree with the two 6 gallon tanks suggestions. Better to have more than you need than not enough.
I have a 16 gallon tank in the floor of our boat and I keep a 6 gallon portable tank under the bow as reserve and in case I end up with fuel contamination in the main tank. I run the 6 gallon one every so often to make sure it has fresh gas in there.
