we have read several reviews that the engine gets water in the cylinders, making it hard to start. Is this a common recurrence with this engine. would any recommend buying this engine.

never heard of the water in the cylinders on a properly mounted engine.
for some years the F25 yamaha was made by mercury marine.
biggest issue was ,especially 15 inch transoms, the weight of the engine and operator at the transom would force water up the exhaust tube and flood the bottom cylinder.
bottom line is you need to have at least 4 to 5 inches between the static water line and the ex relief port with the hull at a normal loading.
learned this the hard way, sold a 15 inch F25 to a guy, then it kept coming back with water in the bottom cyl.
I would launch it and run around fine, cust pick it up and be back the next day with the rig.
finally the customer and his BROTHER brought it in, he is also the normal operator of this 14 ft semi V hull tiller handle rig.
I am about 6ft and 145 pounds.
this guy is about 5.8 and at least 250.
normal launch, brother got in the boat, customer backed the rig in, thats when the bottom cylinder went under. I watched it in amazement :)
so be aware of the extra weight on the transom and the intended hull its going on.

I have a F25 - never had a problem, though I wish it wasn't so heavy. Uses less than half the gas as the 15hp 2 stroke it replaced.

Improper storage of any outboard can cause water to get in the cylinders through the exhaust ports when all the water isn't drained from the leg before storing it horizontally.
