Is there a difference between a 14" flywheel for an inboard 350 with the aft mounted starter vs. a regular style 350 starter config? I cant get my starter to engage. Stater is about an inch to short in length to hit the teeth.

Yeah, the ring gear on this flywheel is forward. I need the opposite.

on most, you can warm the ring gear evenly with a torch, and move it to the other side.

really? Never would have thought. What holds it in place with all the torque?

rust expansion!

It's a shrink fit. Figure about 1/2 in wide and about 44 in. circ. that's around 22 square inches of contact.

Kinda like a big oil filter band wrench

Ayuh,... It's known as a Resistence Fit around here...

Knock it off the flywheel with a hammer,+ punch, no heat necessary...
Then heat the Ring Gear in the oven, set to HIGH, for 20 minutes...
Pull it out,+ drop it onto the flywheel,.... It'll literally fall into place on the flywheel...

Is there a "direction" of travel for the ring gear? What I mean by that is, if the gear was meant for a forward-mounted starter, when I press it off, does it need to be flipped over when I reinstall? It looks to be a straight tooth but not sure.

Thanks guys. You just saved me about $300.00.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Ayuh,... The Ring Gear is Bi-directional...
Matter of fact, I've flipped over questionable ring gears to get another lap outa 'em...

next issue. I removed the ring only to find that the flywheel is turned to a smaller diameter at that spot. Can this be installed backwards? I always thought that the damper had to be against the flat side of the flywheel. If I heat up the ring, will it expand enough to fit over the non-turned down part? Do I have the wrong flywheel?

Happy Thanksgiving all.

your flywheel isnt machined remount the ring gear. you will either need to have it machined or find the correct part.

Unless I`m wrong, that wheel is for a I/O not inboard.

not all inboards use a top mount rear entry starter, the really fun ones are on twins with bottom mounts :).
the flywheel in the pic looks to be for a bottom fwd mount starter and the aft edge was not machined to accept the aft mount starter ring gear.

So can I buy an automotive type at the local parts store and flip the ring gear? Or am I back to spending $250.00 for a used one?

You can try but I would take the gear with you when you go to pick it up. Not catching what motor it is for the best bet is to find the # of the flywheel you need and then do a Goggle search on - Inboard flywheel for a 350 and you will find it.
