Re: MerCruiser 470 / 170 hp - Gauge Help

I think I have done this right, according to the manual.... regarding the Oil Pressure Sender.

I tried to put the positive connection on my ohms meter to the front of the sender terminal, and the negative to the back (by the bolt) to get a reading.... Absolutely nothing happened, so I removed the sending unit and tried again. Still nothing.

Does that mean I need to replace it if nothing was read from it? Or did I just do it wrong?

Sounds like you did it right. At zero pressure, you should have had 227-257 ohms. Just make sure your meter leads had good contact.

I am going to replace the oil sending unit tomorrow.... so far, so good... I am only 2 gauges away from all of them working! Getting more excited each day... man is it a chore to have to do all this before even getting to take it out for a spin.

First time boat owner fun I suppose. :)

Good job !

You will definitely appreciate all of the hard work once you get out and have some trouble-free, safe, boating fun.

Boats are NOT where you want to be half-azzed. You can't lock them up and walk home when something goes wrong on the water.

Continued ggod luck & happy boating.

I replaced the oil pressure sending unit and am now getting a reading on the gauge.

I've been taking out the gauges, grinding off corrosion and stuff, and putting them back in.

Now that I've done that to my fuel gauge, it thinks it back on half a tank again haha. I'm going to have to fiddle with it again to see what's up.

Lastly, I have to get the trim working, so that I can see my trim gauge work, adjust the timing, and then the easy stuff... making the trailer legal.

Playing with these things for several days, I've gotten a pretty good understanding of how it all works, so that's a big plus when trying to troubleshoot.

You're doing a great job. Keep up the good work.

Listen, the trim gauge is an expensive, pain in the *** if it's the trim sender/s, which it probably is. Test the gauge, and if it turns out to be the sender/s, consider letting it be. Anybody worth their salt can tell when their boat is on plane and running well. Likewise, anyone worth their salt can pivot their head and see when their drive is up all the way to trailer the boat. However, if you insist that you need it, there is very good help available.

BTW: I'm about as anal as they come, and mine don't work. I pulled my engine today, and I am definitely replacing them...:D

When I press the trim buttons (up or down), I hear a clicking noise... so I bought a new solenoid today and will put it on tomorrow. I'm going to get to the bottom of it ha.

I'm kind of anal, too.... if I can't get it "right" then I'm not happy about it... I'll always wonder why it won't work, and then think my boat is a piece of crap until I do kind of thing. One thing can be broken, but to me, everything is broken until everything is right. I know, I'm crazy.

I wish the person that had this before me didn't start clipping and unplugging wires without marking where they came from. It has caused me so much pure hell over the past week.

Attaching a picture of the boat.

Also, just to inform you of the amazing deal I got, I only paid $675.00 for the boat and trailer, though I've put a few hundred in it so far. Still, I'm under the $1,000 mark for what will be a really good boat.

That's a darn fine looking boat...is it a Stamas? 23-24' ? And the price is amazing. How's the deck, engine compartment & stringers...any idea ?

I know what you mean about the wiring being a nightmare, but once you get it squared away you'll know that thing inside and out.

Once you get your new solenoid in, if you need info. on the trim limit & sender, trim pump etc. It's all in manual #6 here; http://www.4shared.com/file/115650149/5fc7e090/Service_Manual_06.html

Also, you may want to peruse these service bulletins from your era for your engine. Often there are changes/updates that you need to know about.

Lastly, did you ever find, or verify your engine serial number?

Keep it up, she'll be good as new soon.

Re: MerCruiser 470 / 170 hp - Gauge Help

I forgot to grab the serial, but I will soon.

Thanks for all the help. Turns out, the tilt pump is bad. Any idea on where I could get a good deal on one?

It's a Stamas, 21 footer. Just got the timing adjusted on the engine, and man it purrs really nicely.

So far, what I can think of, I need a new thermostat, tilt pump, and I am going to have to find a blower as well.

After those few things are all done, and I fix up the trailer and put rollers on it (yes, the guy that owned it was an idiot). Just going to repair some very minor scrapes on the bottom, give it a fresh paint job, and it will be ready to hit the water. How fun :)

Re: MerCruiser 470 / 170 hp - Gauge Help

Just waiting on the eBay auction to end on the new tilt pump, then I need to put a thermostat in, and go get a small blower motor for the blower.... couple of other things I might replace along the way, but I'm thinking that is going to wrap it up... Well, fuel sender, a speed gauge and sender (peedo or whatever)...

I can't tell you how happy I will be when this thing is finished. But I also can't tell you how appreciative I will be of the next boat that I buy that doesn't have all these initial problems. Then I can spend the time and money on other things to make IT much better.

Haven't forgotten about that serial number, but it's raining. :)

When the weather stops it's nastiness, I can get back out there and get that serial and get back to work on it... I guess that's going to be a few days.

Re: MerCruiser 470 / 170 hp - Starter Question

Re: MerCruiser 470 / 170 hp - Starter Question

Ok, the only two serial numbers I found were:

Drive Unit: A479373

And the one on top of the engine by the specs (Points gap, Rotation, etc.):

A494755.

I need a new starter.... I am looking at these two on eBay:
NEW Mercruiser 7.5 8.1 8.2 8.9 9.0 9.4 L STARTER 67-02 : eBay Motors (item 280351544493 end time Feb-22-10 15:19:13 PST)

NEW STARTER MERCRUISER INBOARD MARINE 1108525 1109484 : eBay Motors (item 360177390032 end time Feb-01-10 08:02:16 PST)

Can someone tell me which one will work? (If any)

Thanks so much in advance. Also, for those of you that have been on this thread with me from day one--- The boat is almost completely finished... Just gotta get this starter in.

Also, I just found "Transom Assembly" serial: A507369

P.S. My engine rotation is CCW! The starter is located on the port side with the piece that rotates facing the BACK.

Damn Pierpark, just wondering what kind of background you have. Electronics, mechanical? Your kicking @ss with that 470. You havent even had a chance to see how much everyone here hates them. Me not included. I bought a mechanics special i am trying to get going with twins of that and you just blew by me.
I think i made the mistake of firing one of my motors up (they sat with the po for 2 years but had good comp. couldnt help myself)with a tune up without replacing the impellers first. (new to boating and didnt know i would cook stuff, closed cooling though) Just rebuilt one carb and bought a used dwell meter on flea bay and am tracking down some corroded connections myself to tune it. Stepped away from the one that smelled like burnt rubber.
Do you still have the points in her? Have you read about the conversions available? Great to hear another resurrection of that beast here. Best of luck. If you can post a vid of that running, I could use some inspiration.

Re: MerCruiser 470 / 170 hp - Gauge Help

None of the starters you listed are the one you want. You are looking on the inboard engines, and you have an IO aka Sterndrive engine. Big difference.
The OEM number you want is 97499R3 (in the older days the number was 50-97499R 3)
You also have a 1986 Model 170 (470 type engine, but not called a 470)
Therefore, for the service manual, you need #8 http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=1693398#post 1693398
from the sticky, not #3.

Keep one other thing in mind. This engine is not a Chevy, or a Ford. It's an aluminum block manufactured by Mercruiser, with a Ford head stuck on top of an open deck designed block. DO NOT overheat it, or it will take out your head gasket.

Thanks guys... just got the new starter and solenoid in.

Now I'm on here downloading my manuals on the shop computer so I can figure out where the wires go to on the solenoid because I forgot.
