I just purchassed a used 2005 Lund 17 Explorer SS and want to put on a foot controlled trolling motor, but since it is away for the winter and can't measure the distance from bow to water, I am wondering what length shaft I need. I would like to go for either a 50" or 54", but just want to make sure this will be long enough.

Go with the 54'' shaft. I have a 17ft polar kraft with a 54'' shaft and its nothing too short for rough water.

Go with the 54-inch. The advantage is even if it the shaft turns out to be a bit long, you can adjust the motor upward a bit with the clamp. If you went with the 50 and it's too short you have no choice but to replace the shaft. Besides, 54 should bright for that boat.

Won't argue with the xperts. If you are too short you are just out of luck. As stated, too long and you just raise it up and lock it. The rougher the water the more depth you need and you and I both know you can't predict the level of wind driven waves you will encounter. BTDT
