what's the max rpms i you can safely run on muffs? i havent really run my boat since July and wanted to burn off the old fuel in the cylinders and what ever carbon and such that the stabil marine may have loosened up. want to do this before i go to the lake because the launch i use is small and usually crowded. i want to be able to get in and get off without having to deal with a long warm-up or fouled plugs etc.

it's my understanding you shouldn't run your engine in gear when on muffs. use the muffs to start the vessel, make sure it's going to start when you launch it, test the pee stream and of course make sure the battery has the kick to start the engine..

I've read here numerous times not to put it in gear...

When running on muffs you should keep it at idle speed and don't put it in gear. I warm my motor this way and make sure everything is working before heading to the ramp.

I think the keep it out of gear is more for safety than anything else. There should be no difference in the amount of water being used by the engine when it is in gear, only 18 inch spinning blades of death and malice, plus there is no resistance on the prop so it wouldn?t tell you much as far as idling in gear. I would not rev up the engine much though. At higher RPMs the engine does move more water, without a proper amount of water pressure motor may try suck more water than is available. I have gone up to and held 3000 rpm without any shortage of water.
